My Jeep is a 77 and has the older rollbar that is perpendicular to the ground (and I hate it) and I want to swap with my late eighties / early nineties YJ rollbar that's swept back like the late 79's-86's and mounts the same.

I know this is not a direct swap out, and will require some welding and bolt hole filling, but is there any real issue with doing this? Will I be able to make it fit down behind the front seats on the floor there easily enough? I don't need it perfect, just reasonably sturdy.

You shouldn't have any issues swapping to the 78.5-86 floor mount rollbar. As you mentioned you will need to fill in the 8 mounting holes from the wheel well rollbar.

I must say this, I don't want you to get snapped at, It's not a rollbar it's a "sport bar". :)

When I hear sports bar I think of a yj, or a bar with 12 large screen TV's with 6 different games on. My CJ has a rollbar, nuff said.

Now there's a man who isn't afraid to swim against the tied. Good luck man, I hope you are not over whelmed by the rollbar/rollcage/oh my good we have to be safe from EVERYTHING crowd. I never knew how big a bunch of criminals my parents and grand parents were to allow us to ride in an open jeep with no roll anything or helmets or knee pads. Annd the thoughtless Neanderthals allowed us to ride our bikes and scooters without helmets. Annnnnndd we were allowed, from an early age to roam the countryside without an ever hovering parent to keep us from learning about life. My goodness how did we ever survive. ..... "The previous rant is in no way reflective of this boards wishes or policies"

In the NE its swimming with the tide.

I agree with both of you. My CJ has a rollbar as well but if someone wants to call it a sports bar then whatever.

I agree, doesn't matter what folks call it. I'm not sure why HH felt a need to jump in to correct me.

Fact, it's a roll bar, your 77 and my 79 factory service manuals refer to them as such, no where in the manual does it say sport bar, the FSM trumps all IMO. Again, not a big deal call it whatever you like.

A roll bar should protect you in a roll over and a sport bar-Not so much. A roll bar needs to be fastened to the frame of a vehicle. However, I don't care what people call it. I can figure out what their talking about. And as far as HH. Don't take it personally, He does it to every one.

What, You've got to be kidding, was there an insult in my post(?), both posts were a light hearted joke about the use of words and todays preoccupation with perpetual all encompassing safety. There fore the smiley. I am beginning to wonder if there is a place for me in this world where nobody seems to have a sense of humor anymore. ..... then again maybe I should listen to my own words on the matter.

In an earlier thread I was snapped at for the improper use of "Roll bar" as in, "It's not a "roll bar" it's a "sport bar", a change in advertisement nomenclature required due to some law suite or other brought against Jeep. I was attempting to save some pain for the OP. Maybe direct language isn't PC anymore, can't help it I was brought up with the idea that a direct and honest answer was the best in almost all situations.

As far as changing your safety equipment, hey I'm good with all of it.

I thought it was funny HH. Wait - this is getting dangerous- I need to go get my helmet and pads - but :dung: all I've got to hide under is my light bar! [emoji23][emoji23] I agree, I had a YZ125 (that's a big, fast 2 stroke dirt bike) when I was 13, I'd have to wrap my kid in armor to do that today without being hauled off.

Whatever you call it, you can put one in your CJ, I did. No issues.

Wooly

Oh we are good. I recall a thread on here or another forum where there was a big argument over this topic and it was silly. You say roll bar or sport bar we know what's being talked about. In the literature it was a roll bar regardless of whether or not it was the best design.
