the 1973 jeep hs a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine that was a little neglected. Most of the vacuum lines are cracked and the fuel drips inside the carb on idle. I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, condensor, fuel filter and repaired the vacuum lines. It got better, but is still horribly rich and floods constantly. You have to keep bumping gas pedal to keep it running.

I have a rebuild kit ordered, and need advice on setting the carb. Also, vacuum line routing just to make sure I have it right.

Thanks

If you have the breakerless ignition and it has a heavy miss to it then I would consider the ignition control module. Those old old style ignitions are quite poor at best and a good solution would be a GM high energy ignition like the D.U.I. aftermarket unit for your engine..

You can get a Pertronix module that replaces the points and condenser in you distributer. I did that along with a MSD coil, wires, and MSD box. Along with a fake weber 34/34 carb it made a huge difference.

IF you are going to an ignition upgrade, You'll save money going GM HEI and have the same type unit that DUI sells. You can get an inline 6 unit from an early Camaro/Nova/S-10 for about $110 at NAPA or a parts store. Most are made by Cardone Industries, new. You will need to add the AMC V-8 dizzy gear for the 360 and replace the one it comes with. Buy the MOPAR part for $70 and skip the Crown piece as the QC is awful. While you change the gear, check for .010 - .015 clearance between the top of the new gear and the bottom edge of the housing and shim with 1/2" hardened washer if too large of a gap.

The GM units although identical have slightly different advance curves. The Nova unit starts advancing @ 1400 rpm (with the installed springs) and has a total mech advance of 20 - 22 deg.

Of course, if you want to spend $140 extra...get the DUI.

I was looking for quick and simple. Not much time to chase parts. Not much there for parts without having to wait for shipping. Jeeps live at the cabin! I was planning on making it as easy as I could out there as tools are a bit Limited .

I have a carb rebuild kit to do as well.
The less time I spend under the hood, the happier the kitchen is!

Interesting, that does look like the Motorcraft ignition that came out in '78 to '90 along with a completly different ignition system that goes with it.

After looking at your pic what I would do is the team rush upgrade and move your filter up by the carb instead of right off the pump.

The fuel filter was up by the carb before, but it always had an air bubble because it hung at an angle. Jeep was hard starting. I reversed the hoses to place that fuel pump vertical above the pump. Now there is no air pocket but it runs rich and floods the carb to the point that gas drips out of the carb and it floods.

It is normal for there to be a air bubble in the filter. That's where the factory put them so I think their must have been a reason for that. If it is flooding and dripping gas your float may be to high or it may just be time for a rebuild.

The carb rebuild kit should come with all specs.

Idle Problems

Your also going to need to ck and confirm ign timing.
