Hey all, looking to invest soon on a suspension lift for the CJ. Currently I am riding on 32X11.5X15 Mud Kings (that will be changed later) and a 2" body lift that the PO put on. Personally, Id like to rip out the Body lift and just go with the lift. The largest tire I would ever go to was a 33" since I have the I-6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine.

With that being said, Rusty's has a 4" lift kit that they sale starting at 420 before you add in quicker disconnects and such. Ive tried to search on here for reviews to no avail, but is this a solid buy? I know I might get bashed about skipping on money for now, but prepping the money for a future engine rehaul. URL below for Rusty's kit. Useful thing about Rusty's is that they are a 45 minute drive away, and I hear they are good for helping with any issues you have with purchases.

Thoughts? Feed me to the wolves on the money factor, but willing to be talked into spending 300 more for skyjackers if you all say its worth it...

Been running mine for almost 3 years now, it takes a little while for the springs to soften up, but you can expect a slightly rougher ride with almost any lift. The spings flex pretty good too. I haven't had any problems from mine at all. For your money you can't beat it. Imo you don't have to spend $1000 to get a decent lift, although you might have to live with stiff springs just a little longer than with the more expensive kits. Buy it you won't regret it.

Just remember with a 4 in. lift your probably going to have to add a drop pitman arm and some degree shims for the rear axle and or a Transfer Case drop.

And longer brake lines.
I'd avoid the t/c drop, no since lifting it up and than droping the t/c.
Mine was fine without it.
I also fliped my tie-rod and draglink to avoid using the drop pitman arm.
Just something to think about.

Good points. Mine was a CJ5 and the Transfer Case drop came with it. I hated it. Im with OD on this one. I dont even care for the way the Transfer Case hung down from the factory.

I could grab a narrow trac Dana 30 right now that was reamed for the tie rod flip and has 4.56 gears for $AMC 150 . Obamanomics has really put a hurtin on me so far this year. :(

Yeah I hate the drop Transfer Case also, unfortunately if I don't have the 1" drop mine vibrates and makes all kinds on noise! Pretty sure I may have some issues to address. But for now, its quiet with no vibration at all!

I'm looking to do the same thing on my CJ7 , so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Good post.

with you having a 5 you might need one, but the 7's can usually get away without a drop.
You could probally get rid of the drop if you went with a cv shaft.

Go for it! Looks like a complete kit. Post up some feedback on it when you get it :chug:

Mine came with degree shims. The other guys are right about the d shaft, I have a little vibration but I live with it, still need to buy one. You'll definately need to do something about it. I also got away with the factory pitman arm, but having a 5 and it already going to be a little touchy with the lift I'd spring for a dropped one. Or for about $25-30 more your money would be better spent on a tie rod flip kit (highsteer). Do a little research and you'll find that Chevy brake lines will take care of your brake issues on the cheap, don't know right off hand what years you need but the info is out there. Can't remember what I bought.

This kit doesnt come with the degree shims, nor the drop for the TC (If I wanted to go that route) so looking now of where I can get them. (A rough search on thier site is coming up short for shims, they have TC drop kits, but not for CJ's)

I see on one of our sponsor sites that they have the Rough Country 4" lift for about the same price, but it includes the pitman arm and a drop kit for the TC.
Rough Country 4 Inch Suspension Lift Kit for Jeep CJ5, CJ6, CJ7 Scrambler at Morris 4x4

Still want to go to Rusty's if possible due to proximity, but might require a call to see if they have the extra parts.

Been searching on the 'net alot these last few days on how to's for lifts, found a few Youtube videos, and some good post here on what not to do. Ive gotta say, this site has just about anyting when it comes to teardowns and buildups for CJ's. Kudos for those that keep contributing. :chug:

I went rough country as well. Everything comes with it and, for the price, it's hard to beat. I just ordered mine so I can't provide any feedback on it yet. I am undecided on if I should use the Transfer Case drop after reading the posts here . . .

my vibs seemed worse w/o it in? but is'nt to bad

Picked up the hardware from Rusty's today. I verified before I left, and the degree shims are in there. Pic below. Will get the kids to sleep and spend the night working on this. A friend volunteered and I gladly excepted:p, the poor bast:censored:rd doesn't know what he's in for. Actually, he might just sit back and laugh at me all night.

How did the install go for you? The kit looks pretty nice. Can't wait to see your feedback on the kit and how it rides.

Having issues getting the first ( driver side front) off of the frame. I took the outside nut off with impact wrench easily, but bolt going through isnt budging. Any idea how I get this one out.

Tip that I have from last night. Get a revolutions of the ubolts, then cut them. Otherwise you get to pull the nut through any garbage that the PO didn't clear.

Worried to take front passenger side off when I can't get the first spring off. Ideas?
