Sand Dunes?

OK who takes their jeep out to the sand dunes? Ive been missing the dunes sense I sold my dirt bike and sand rail.

Here in SoCal there is the Algodones Dunes located in the SE part of the state, The Glamis area is the most popular. Insanity is the norm for Easter and Thanksgiving, and it takes a few lives from time to time. I am not the sand type, but some of the guys in my club and others around here have sand specific Jeeps along with a rock crawler rig. A good sand runner requires power and light weight to turn those huge sand tires.

Thanks Torxhead Im not new to the sand dune scene. Just wondering who goes to the dunes and what you running? Myself Im just wanting to to cruise the dunes no jumping, racing. Going to leave that up to people with good backs.

I have ran in everything but sand. I have always thought you have to have it set up for sand or you will not get very far. So I stick to mud, rocks and water thats what I know how to do and there isn't much sand in the mountains

I've been with friends that take their trucks with street tires out in the dunes. They go ok but could go better I believe. I've seen street diesels running around in the dunes also. I know those things are heavy!
Why wouldn't a jeep go I keep asking myself. Maybe I should buy another sandrail?

Sand can be very forgiving at times....it can also destroy components.
I believe you might have an issue with the two different sizes of sand tires you have pictured.
Do you have knowledge of the person or rig these were used on ?
I would probably hesitate to run that much difference on my Jeep, even in the sand.

Hagar those paddles look smaller but in person they are the same size. The picture is very conceiving. Guy I picked them up from had a 47 CJ2a with a 383 running 500 hp. SO my jeep might be a little underpowered but we will see.

Hey hagar been a while since I saw a set up like that. Reminds me of some of the rigs I remeber from when dad was racing in the 70's. It was back east, so no sand but hill climbs, dirt drag strips and obstacle courses. You can see his jeep in my avatar.

A jeep with all terrain type tires aired down to about 8-10 pounds and an orange flag taped to the top of the CB antenna was all we use to use on the Oregon dunes. No need to spend a lot of money on tires to go have fun. Now you have to pay for a permit plus a parking fee to use less than a quarter of the sand that use to be open.

Thanks Saddle Tramp I've seen what a vehicle will do with a set of street tires aired down. When I bought my first jeep I had a dirt bike, and a sand rail loved every minute at the dunes. But as we all know jeeps take a ton of your money. I couldn't afford all my toys so some had to go to fund my jeep. As for the price of the paddles I payed $350 so I couldn't pass up the deal. ( down the road I plan on buying another sand rail so they paddles won't go to waste )

I know this is an old thread, but I am in the same spot as the Original poster. I wonder how well the CJ7 will do in the sand.
I too bought paddle tires, hahaha, but wonder if I need a locker... Thanks.
