Sand Dunes?

Sand Dunes?
Hello,
I know this is an old thread, but I am in the same spot as the Original poster. I wonder how well the CJ7 will do in the sand.
I too bought paddle tires, hahaha, but wonder if I need a locker... Thanks.

You should be ok without lockers you would be suprised how well they float with a set of paddles that are way softer then any street tire.

That's good to know, I found some padlles mounted on Alcoas on Craigslist, I will probably take it out there for the Dune cleanup trip. Thanks!

Having been duning in the Imperial sands dunes for a few decades, I have seen alot of jeeps in the dunes from stock to highly modified. The combo that seems to work the best for overall duning are the desert traks (some are now called desert explorer) in front and paddles in the rear.
While I typically run 7 to 10 psi in my paddles, my buggy is lighter than a CJ, so a little experimenting with air pressure will be needed.
Lockers are a nice to have but not a necessity.

OOh, I am getting excited now, Hahaha!!! Thanks!
I was getting a little concerned. I an in Anaheim, and trailering the Jeep out to Glamis for a trial run is not out of the question, but a hell of a lot of work to get out there and just sink all the time....

I have grown up going out there, took a 15yr hiatus in order to raise my family, buy a house, all that jazz>>>>

Finally have the time, finances and freedom to enjoy it again, and the Jeep is just what I had here for my son. My toy now, and boy am I getting into it, LOL!

Can't wait! Thanks guys! I will get to see what a somewhat stock CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with TBI on paddles on all four corners will do. I am fully expecting power to be robbed, and will more than likely run my Daily's up front, but I have to try it. The set I bought belonged to a Bronco owner, and swore by them.

This will be super fun! I am not expecting to be blasting all around the place at 60 mph, but significant camp cruising, head over to the races and Oldsmobile....should totally not be out of the question....Cool!

Gets me pumped to start collecting LS parts for a future swap

Well if the fronts are full on paddles you be eating alot of sand from the roost that they will kick up and may cause steering problems. Everybody hates riding behind me because of the roost.
If you have a set of M/S tires for the front, those should be good. Aired down of couse.
Yea the stock six maybe abit underpowered but if it's geared properly should be OK.
Good luck and have fun. We will heading out to the dunes for T-day weekend.
