It's winter here in interior Alaska so I decided to take my 74 CJ5 for a short drive to see how it behaves on icy roads.
Not to good! It will no doubt be good in deep snow, but it's scary on the road.
I down shifted when aproaching an intersection and the cj instantly swapped ends in the on coming lane. Luckily there was no other traffic.

My first jeep was a CJ5 . I was trying to go down a icy hill one winter in low gear when it lost traction and did 2 1/2 spins. Got lucky and when it came around pointing up hill gunned it and went back up without problem. All this took place in about 5 seconds. When they swap ends it sure happens fast.

I learned how to drive my 5 on icy road but I would never ask anyone else to do it. It is a scary ride with only 84 inches of wheel base. A lift and mud tires add to the excitement as well.

Back when I had my 73 CJ5 I can remember swaping ends a few times on ice and snow, and that was with open diffs. They are not a good on road winter vehicle.

Swapped ends twice on my 78 CJ5 as well. 4in lift, 33 in Bfg mud terrains, and a lock rite in the front. My Scrambler is the best Jeep I ever had for snow driving.

When it icy roads around here, it's off road only for me with lockers.

With open diffs it wasn't so good either.

Let's face it, short wheelbases can get wild on ice.

I had wondered where the CJ5 's went in the winter. Until yesterday I assumed peolpe parked them due to the rag top and poor heaters.
Now I know! My heater works great in both my cj and yj but the longer wheelbase in my yj makes a world of difference.
This is the only thing I've ever found where the longer stance CJ7 's, yj's, tj's had an edge over the CJ5 .

My '63 was the same way...as they all are. That short wheelbase is disastrous on slick roads. It takes some getting used to and even then, it's ridiculously easy to end up in a flat-spin down the road

Since this one is soa, I was thinking about the prospects of a roll over and was glad I was wearing my seatbelt as I was "flat spinning".:o
