Scout drivetrain in Jeep question

Im looking at purchasing a CJ7 ..the owner dosnt seem to sure about the drivetrain questions i ask him but he says the entire drivetrain is from a scout..44's front and back, hes not sure what 4spd tranny it has, says it has a dual stick Transfer Case with PTO so i assume its a Dana 300 says it has a AMC 304 ..does this seem right? Maybe its a scout AMC 304 ? isnt the Transfer Case output the opposite side...just getting back into Jeeping and dont really remember all the combos..any info would be appreciated..thanks

Could be a Scout drivetrain....I think there was a IH AMC 304 , but I could be wrong. The Transfer Case is still passenger-side drop...Just like Jeep. That I know for sure. The PTO isn't indicative of a Jeep Dana 300 .

Sounds like a Dana 20 TC to me - and CJim7 was correct, the IH AMC 304 is not the same as the AMC

And one more thing - Scouts were a lot like Jeeps of that time period, they used many parts that were laying around to make the unit. You will have to get casting #'s etc to get it 100% right. Just my opinion.

Thanks..I bought it sight unseen cause it was a good deal..I'll check it out Thursday ..but from new info I got now is that everything is scout the engine and all..

If it actually is a IH AMC 304 , an IH 345 will bolt-in. We did that with a water-tanker a few years back.

That IH AMC 304 has to weigh 3 times as much as an AMC 304 .
Good tough engine as all IH gas engines were.
Just don't see the practical use in a CJ.

Although a T18/T19 may have the same guts on balance between the Jeep/Ford/IH versions the shaft lengths and bolt patterns are not all the same, particularly the IH; adapting the HI T18/19 to a Jeep motor is expensive and for the most part not practical. The T19 will have PTO ports on both sides of the transmission.

As Hagar stated the AMC and IH 304 are completely different animals with the IH version the turd in the group; much heavier and more of a liability than an asset in a CJ in my opinion. Now that’s not to say this theory applies to all motors used by IH as in the early 1970s the IH Travelall (IH version of a Suburban) was available with a 400 CI V8motor which was really an AMC 401. (Who Knew!)

The only year that the Dana 300 transfer case was used in a Scout was 1980 and then only for a short period of time as the labor unions decided to pick on IH that year and went on strike with just over 36,000 units built. Long story short they managed to strangle the goose and IH never produced another passenger vehicle again so the Scout was lost. The Scout version of the Dana 300 used in 1980 behind manual transmissions (autos don’t count) have the same “Texas” bolt pattern as the Spicer/Dana 20 used by both IH and Jeep. (The Jeep version of the Dana 300 bolt pattern of course is round.) These transfer cases are a direct bolt in in lieu of the 20 and as such are an easy swap behind a T18 orT150 with a D20 set up for a lower crawl ratio.

So, if the motor in your jeep is IH then the tranny and transfer case could all be IH.

Ok so finally seen it ..AMC 304 .. T-18 ..and I'm asumming a Dana 20 twin stick..rear looks like a d 44 measuring 52inches from backing plate to backing plate..front is pretty wide sticks out at least 3 inches past the flares on each side..can't find any identification on it..other than the passenger side tube is pretty short and it has a built in saddle so both u bolts sit in a slot..I believe this is a Dana 44 .. I compared it to a wide track Dana 30 which only has one u bolt that kind of sits in the side of the pumpkin..and the other right on the tube..do you guys think this is a 44...weird thing is I thought you had to have the springs outboard..the one is bolted up normally..

It looks like a Dana 44 .
Could you take some more pic's of the steering from the front of the jeep, and the springs on both ends, your shackle angle is not right. It should lean away from the jeep, it's going to ride like the way it is, it could also invert when off road. Looks like the PO made his own shackle hangers.
Since it is not out boarded it could be narrowed on the long side.

Look on page 3 post 26 for a couple sites to look up the numbers stamped in the axle to see what it came from.

another weird thing i noticed is the rad was sitting up about 3-4 inches..after checking it out it was sitting right on top of the p.s pump..looked to be modified or moved maybe..it has a yj body right now maybe the guy moved it to accomodate steering angle i dunno...so then i guess the hood wouldnt close..so there were spacers on the rad to move it towards the engine to clear the hood. But the engine has no fan so it probably dosnt fit anymore...i think to many bad mods done..the parts are right just think it was butchered..probably going to back out

X 2. These could be FSJ axles with the front cut down but lets go back to Old Dog's statement about the shackles; something is not right.
