I'm really debating wether to grab the Scrambler I'm going to look at or use my savings for tools and a few things to "finish" the Laredo . Right now all I really have are the basic hand tools. I could get a welder air compressor and acc. sand blaster press and still have enough for my 4 to 1 kit winch cable and new carb.

Or I could get that solid Scrambler project that needs minimal welding but lots of assembly. I really want one for camping but this one wouldn't be ready for the road till next year. Do I outfit the garage and add the upgrades to the CJ7 or grab the Scrambler while I can? I do have a tub I can make into a trailer for a temporary solution.

I recently had the same choice, and picked up the CJ8 . I found out that if for some reason I can’t work on the CJ7 , I know there is something to do on the CJ8 . There is always time to get a tool here and there, but a CJ8 for a good price doesn’t always come around.

Buy the tools and stay focus on the task as hand. There will always be another 8 down the road.

I picked a Yugo because when i was 15 I could lift the back end up and spin the car sideways.

Man Pete what a debate! Tools or a jeep hummm. Do you have space for all the new tools? How often do you come by a clean CJ8 ?

Hmmmm tools or a CJ8 . When I started working on my CJ I had more than a starter set of tool but far fewer than I have now. You don't have to buy new tools. Craigs list is a god send for some tools, people buy them for a project then get rid of them, divorces and a death in the family brings a bunch of really good tools to Craigs list, then there are pawn shops they generally have very good prices on tools and finally if you know what your are looking at Harbor Freight tools are getting better and better. Most of my purchases lately are used items and I haven't been burned yet.

S0, you might actually be able to get the CJ8 AND most of the tools you need. Generally if you have a complete set of wrenches, a small machinist hammer and a 2 lb sledge hammer, a really good Vise, some C-clamps, a set of punches, a drill motor or better yet a drill press and most importantly a really good 4.5" angle grinder and a MIG welder you will be set. Sure there are other specialty tools but with the grinder and welder you can blacksmith together items like bearing setters and long shank brushes to clean out axle tubes ..... the list is almost endless.

You need to add tools AND CJ8 , I voted for tools and upgrading the CJ7 , but my heart is in the tools and CJ8 , with the tools you can still upgrade the CJ7 .

I say go for the Scrambler project. They don't come by too often and in the shape you say. Tools will always be available and you can pick them up as you need them because they cost much less. It'll take you a while to save up a lump for a future Scrambler again if you blow it now on tools that you don't yet need. But you can save up money for each tool in a few weeks.

I am going to suggest you "finish" the 7, but I can't say why exactly. i am guessing you can drive the 7? and the truth is you will never "finish " the 7.

I have a newly rebuilt T-18a setting on the jack and the CJ5 in the shop up on stands and all I can think about is the Willys. But the cj is running and dependable and as much as it deserves the 4 speed it is quite capable with the three.:D

Sometimes we can just be too easily distracted. OOO look! shinny!

Do you feel more love for the 8 than the 7?:chug:

Agreed. Get the 8. No fancy tools required (except maybe a welder).

Did that to a friend of ours who had a Yugo. We picked it up and put it facing the wrong direction on the nearby sidewalk. After he got two tickets from the cops, we put it back in place. After cursing and stomping around trying to figure out what happened, he went down to the police department for a strange argument.

Get the scrambler for selfish reasons. I need a build thread to read.

Pete, considering not getting an 8 to get tools is just crazy talk, I think we've covered this before :wtf:

:agree: Tools are work. :bang: Yes you need some to complete you project, but the CJ8 is fun. :grinjeep: The ultimate goal here is to have something to drive that is fun. Double the fun with two Jeeps!:banana:

Wow! I have to admit , I thought this thread would go the exact opposite way. Just got off the phone with amother Jersey Scrambler for sale. From what I keep hearing and saying Im leaning back toward the Scrambler. :chug:

Let me buy the CJ8 and you buy the POS rustbucket 7 I'm driving around in now :)

Soap Opera?

I have an 8 but need to sell. Sold the 8 to work on my relationship with my 7. I wish I had my 8 instead. I've been looking for an 8 for some time but I can't find anything decent, not like my old 8 at least. Now that I found a great 8, I want tools...

In the next episode we'll find out that CJ is your long lost twin who mysteriously donated his kidney when you lost conscience from the auto accident. :D :poke:
