I am refinishing all the Transmission covers and noticed that they had some kind of seam sealer putty in the area that overlaps.

Does anyone know what this stuff is, should it be replaced or just put them back without it? it kind of looks like the butyl tape used on RVs.

Thanks guys, I like tape idea for easy of handling, I think I will try that.

I used standard plumbers putty on those seams and under the roll bar mounting plate on my 73. The plumbers putty is cheap, flexible, waterprroof and wont freeze.

I like the idea, my cage is out too while I repaint the inside of the tub.
