I had a 1980 CJ5 that had a rear seat that didn't attach to the floor at all. The sides of the seat had a tab that atached to the top of the wheel wells. It seemed weak but actually worked well and it was easy to remove the seat. Your seat probably doesn't have the tabs but it would be easy to fabricate.

I guess that would work if the kids were all the way inside the cage that I haven't assembed yet while riding there?

Hmmmm maybe I wasn't too clear. The seat wasn't way up in the air, as far as I knew it was a factory seat. The tabs were about elbow level with the bottom of the seat about 6" off the floor but no floor mounts. As you know CJ5 's are never going to be called roomy and space is at a premium so I understand the desire to find storage under the rear seat. I’ve been considering building a tool box with the rear seat as the top.

I think you will end up choosing between a seat or a box. I would think that the seat would have to flip front or back to enter the box and I just don't see the room to make it worthwhile.

If you have a tail gate, maybe a drawer type arrangement.

- 1980 cj5 258ci straight 6, 31x10.50's. Partial Teamrush iginition upgrade, MC 2150 Carb. 4.0 head swap, factory header. I call him "Eugene".
Dad's jeep when he raced in the 70's. Cj2 running gear, ford 300 cu in 6 cyl with 3 deuces. Fiberglass model T body and hand laid fiberglass hood. welded 5.38 gears and beer keg fuel tank. see avatar
Wife's: Black 04' Liberty with all the bells and whistles.
I don't have a tailgate, so a box with a tilt forward seat is what i'm looking at doing. kinda like a YJ fold and tumble. Without the fold just the tumble.
