I have a 74 CJ5 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and manual 3sp. I have what im assuming to be a problem when backing up. If I just release the clutch slowly with no throttle input it does fine but if I give any throttle at all it shudders badly and the more throttle the worse it is. Forward gears do not exhibit this condition. Any ideas? I did a partial restoration a couple of years ago and while I had it apart I resurfaced the flywheel thinking that was the problem and still get the same thing.

Did you install a new clutch disc when you did the resto? Could be that it's got some oil soaked spots on it. And I'm guessing at this too but how are your driveline angles on the rear axle? Motor mounts shot?

Im sure the clutch has oil on it the valve cover leaks an amazing amount
