1980 CJ5 Renegade-258cid w-tilt / pwr steering / manual brakes / Team Rush ignition upgrade.
I will be finishing up a complete tune-up on the 5 this weekend which will include the Team Rush Upgrade. While researching the TR upgrade I noticed the Nutter Bypass is mentioned often. I have been reading as much as I can find on the Nutter Bypass and am a little confused about who should do it. It seems it is necessary for the stepper-motor BBD fuel systems but I can't seem to find anything on anyone who's done it on an earlier system like mine. I definitely have an ignition module under the washer reservoir (not sure which type, I haven't "uncovered" it yet) but my carb does not have the stepper motor and the associated problems. I also do not have any other ecm's on the Jeep. Do I need to do the wiring part of the Nutter?? If so, what do I gain by doing it? Finally, I am going to prep the 5 for the Howell TBI kit (bung on the exhaust collector) which I hope to install later this month. Is the Nutter necessary/beneficial before I order the TBI kit?? Sorry for the long post.

no need to do the nutter from what i have read over the last few years while looking for my jeep its only needed in the 82 to early 90s hope that helps. i am just a dumb kid though haha

I am new to Jeeps and am curently doing a engine rebuild and would like to know what a Team Rush upgrade and the Nutter upgrade are?
Thanks

The nutter upgrade is for Jeeps 83 and up and shouldnt be needed on your 82. 83 and up had a computer that controlled timing and the "stepper" carb based on info from emmision sensors. The Team Rush upgrade changes out your Amc cap and rotor for a larger ford version that creates better spark. This allows you to widen your plug gap and make a bigger spark. I did it on my 85 and am very happy with it.

On the Rush upgrade is there a specific cap/rotor or just one from any large cap v6?
In one of the many boxes I got when I bought this jeep were two carter carbs, bbd i believe, with stepper motors. Woule this be correct for a california car?

You better check with the smog dogs there.A member named Baja might come on and tell you. He's in your area

Gotta go with dslywalker here. Either one of these modifications will nullify your Ca. emissions. Now I have to be aware of the state as well?? :D

Thanks to all for the quick reply. RP1, to answer your question about the parts, there are specific p/n's for the distributor cap, distributo cap spacer, rotor, and plug wires. They are the parts used on a '82 Ford 300 I-6, I believe. I searched "Team Rush" in this forum and got the exact p/n's. These will basically plug/clamp right on to your existing distributor base and will help alleviate misfires and crossfires. I am just trying to get my jeep ready for inspection and recently replaced the cap, rotor, coil and plugs with stock parts. When I fired it up, I was surprised to notice an occasional miss or stumble in the idle which I did not have before the "tuneup". After reading a lot of posts about the Team Rush upgrade, I think the problem may be my new coil is a little hotter than the 30 year old coil and is probably arcing to ground or across the smaller cap. I am hoping the TR upgrade will alleviate this problem. From what I've read, it certainly won't hurt anything.

Yea Suzie, I intentionally left off the complete term: Nutter Bypass  I began thinking about the possible replies and decided to leave it as is:)
