Shoulder Harness Installation

I want to replace the lap belts in my 1979 CJ7 with shoulder harness assemblies like the ones that are installed in the 1982 and newer CJs. To accomplish this it appears that I need to install attachment points for the shoulder belts on the roll bar. Can someone tell me the location of these anchor points. I am assuming that the anchors are through holes with threaded bushing welded into the roll bar, but would appreciate it someone could verify this for me. Any additional installation details would be welcome.

The oem bushing attachment point is located 38" up from the floorboard on my '86. I do think it is a bit high though.

Is that 38" from the floor directly up to the mount, or 38" up the roll bar to the mount?

It is from the floorboard straight up with a tape measure.

Can I trouble you to measure up the front of the rollbar from the floor plate to the center of the bushing? Mine is out of the CJ right now and I need to get the thing drilled and bushing installed before I put it back in.

Measuring from the top of the roll bar mounting pad to the center of the bushing, I get 37 1/2".

I'm wanting to do this to my 78 as well. Where did you buy the belts from?

Four Wheel Parts Wholesalers, but any of the big box 4wd outfits should have them. The ones that I bought are not an exact match though.

Going to do something similar with my CJ5 . I can't remember and don't have a jeep handy to look at. Is the mounting hole toward the front of the roll .... sorry "sport bar" or is it on the side? I think I remember it being in front, but don't want to commit with drilling and welding in a threaded nut that is in the wrong place. I'm also getting ready to powder coat my modified sport bar, so being wrong is also being permanent.


EDIT: Well looky there, a quick search and Youtube showed me what I needed to know. It appears that the attaching hole is not quite straight forward on the "Sport Bar". Apparently the point is slightly, 10* or so, toward the outside of the jeep.

I have no idea what the link was. I did a search on "CJ Seat Belt Installation" and got several hits. One was a guy welding in the floor mount for a CJ7 , no good to me. Another one I looked at was a guy who welded in a new floor in his CJ7 , but since his original floor was basically gone he was trying to figure out where to mount his middle floor mount. During that video he showed his attaching points including the one on the "Sport Bar". The point was slightly, maybe 10*, turned to the outside of the jeep. Logical really, I imagine that point would be easier on the shoulder. After seeing the visual of what I was looking for I didn't look much further.

I'm thinking there isn't much science involved here. There is a good chance the upper point location is a compromise of sorts. Small people could use a lower point, bigger people a higher one, average people are happy with where it is. I like a solid shoulder strap so I'm thinking about mounting mine a little lower than stock.
