Maybe there's a quick answer here, maybe not.

Are self dampening mirrors available for CJ's. It seems like there should be something out there to calm down the mirror vibrations on a CJ.

I was looking at 18 wheeler mirrors the other day and started wondering if they were oil filled or something similar. My dad was a truck driver and even though a truck vibrates and shutters like the CJ I don't recall the mirrors dancing around.

Yes, I've gotten used to them and expect the big jumpy image, but is it absolutely necessary?

Ohhh to save a bunch on writing .... Yes they are tight, yes the three screws used to set the mirror are tight, yes I have replaced the plastic morror gromets with metal ones. That by itself was a great improvement.

You mean you use your mirrors I thought they were there just for show :D

Really, 'bout all I ever used my driver side mirror for is as an ottoman for my left leg. :D

Always wondered the same thing. I have noticed that, for some strange reason, the convex circular mirrors that I placed in the corners for blind spots have no distortion at all. Perhaps it is just the shape of the cj mirror that produces the effect

They are on mine to pass inspection. I glance at the driver one but that is about it.

It would be nice to know if there are ones that don't vibrate though. Other than mounting YJ or TJ mirrors of course.

I have the convex mirrors and noticed that as well. I assumed it was because mine have a ball joint type action so they can be fine tuned. Not sure why as they are convex and you can see a wide range regardless.

honestly I haven't gone further than looking at the truck mirrors at a Kenworth dealership. They come with a single ball mount exactly like the Jeep mirrors. The ones I was looking at were round and a little bigger than your average Jeep mirror. I'm going to stop in and check them out further.

I actually do use my mirrors and no I don't expect to see much detail.

The mirrors on my Kenworth W9 are nothing special.... Other than heated, and power adjust. The convex mirrors do vibrate some but not too bad... Can still see if the bear leaves the median..lol

It's more of airflow around the mirror and the mounting that matters.

Ps... The newer trucks ride very well. I have had an half full can of pop make it from Long Beach to Detroit riding in the trailer that never tipped over.

Can you do that upside down too?

I have TJ mirrors on my CJ7 . The vibrate and shake too. Guess it's the nature of the beast.

Hedgehog,
Did you ever find a solution to the vibrating mirrors? I have changed mine thinking the split bushing was the problem, but no improvement. Passenger convex mirror not very bad, but drivers side, different story. Tried piecing together the new mirror with the old mounting arm because the oem was much thicker, not much improvement. The jeep doesn't ride rough, it's just the turbulence, guess I should just drive 20mph. Wow, what a genius!

I never had a vibration issue with original factory mirrors. All of the aftermarket stuff has thinner material and vibrate like hell. On my hard doors I install TJ mirrors that work really well and I can actually use the passenger mirror now. When I remove the doors I just install the driver side CJ mirror but it is useless on the highway.

I replaced mine with a set from Quadratec and while they still jump around at highway speeds they are infinitely more stable than the ones I had on before. Heck, I can even tell the difference between a car and a semi behind me while I am driving.

Thanks guys, I will do a little research and see what I can come up with. I just ordered a new speedometer gear, will install it when it arrives. I'm just working on small stuff to keep me busy.

Haven't been on in a while, I ended up buying a round big rig mirror. It's convex and works great on the passenger side. No shimmy, no shake. Yes, I'm sure it's still there, but I can't see it in this mirror.

No problem. Your Jeep is very nice.
