I recently had to order new windshield hinges and the new ones are not as thick gauge as the old ones. The dilema I have is now there is not enough thread for the mirrors to mount back into the windshield brackets. I really don't want to drill and tap into my tub, or is that what others have done ? I may just buy some original hinges off someone.

The original type hinges would probably save you allot of work...

Can you weld to the new hinges?

I am thinking of just buying a set of originals from someone. The hinges I bought are stainless and black powder coated so welding them would probably turn into a monstrosity.

can you send them back?? who made them?

yes I can send them back. these are made by Kentrol. They are nice but maybe 1/2 the thickness of the originals, they are also stainless steel and P.C. black which is nice.
I want to keep my mirrors, but with the new ones I'll have to tap through the mounting holes on the new hinges and into my tub for a secure mount.

right now I 'm on the fence about doing this. I guess it wouldn't hurt, just make sure everything is sealed correctly.

This is the second pair of hinges I've ordered, the first pair were a mftr. mistake and did not fit the contour of my windshield frame, so they reimbursed me for those. Unfortunately i didn't consider the whole mirror thing at the time.
I want my mirrors mouted there so can take my doors off.

Is there a company that sells something close to the originals ?

Will CJ5 hinges work on the CJ7 ?

In a word yes. I bought a set of "Kentrol" stainless hinges for the wife Jeep & they hold CJ mirrors fine. When you say thinner did you try using shorter bolts?

I was afraid by using the shorter bolt thus only having approx. 3/16" thread onto the new hinges, it might not be that secure.

You say you have mounted a pair on your wifes cj and mirrors without issue ?

I guess they made them thinner to save $'s, I did the wife's Wrangler about 15 years ago & they bolted up fine. Sorry to hear of this new development.

I have Kentrol hinges on mine as well and the mirror has been secure with no problems. I will look at mine and check the thickness but I don't remember having to shorten the bolts. Mine are also not painted, the logic of painted stainless escaped me.

Off to the hardware store tommorrow to pick up some shorter bolts. The ones that came with the mirrors need at least 3
washers to make them work:eek:.

Well finally found some stainless socket head 1/4x1/4 bolts, added a thick stainless lock washer and calling it a go. I think this set will hold well. I'll post some pictures as soon as my wife clears the memory card.

Now on to other issues.

Congratulations on your success!:chug:

remember; God made lock tight thread locker just for us because he loves us and does not want our body and drive train parts falling off at embarrassing moments.
I have a pint bottle on the shelf.
