Sloppy Steering and a ton of road wander
As far as highway speeds go in a CJ5 I have pushed mine to the limit. I out ran a dodge cummins in it one night. had to be going at least 95 mph. Also when I was a kid my dad had a 79 CJ5 as his daily driver it was a 6cyl 3spd. I can remember us going down the highway (90)as fast as she'd go multiple times. but with loose steering that would be pretty scary and don't know that I would want to try it in one that is lifted.

Wow! You are really kool:notworthy:

Hotcars;
I wouldn't wish for anyone to be turned off from jeeping by one rig that may need ball joints. Nor would I wish for anyone to have a crash due to pushing a rig beyond it's safe design limits. Just saying they're not sports cars.

I don`t think so but hey maybe you had a strong tail wind.

Plug in the numbers and see.

And maybe going down a big hill at the same time. But I can see how doing 65 might have felt like 95.:D
I had a new 73 that would do 65 but it was a scarry ride. The CJ7 I have now is a little better but not much.

now boyz...play nice :laugh:
I have gone 85 in my CJ...once. And it was measured by the hand held GPS in the truck, which was a good thing since the speedo didn't work! LOL
I wanted to catch up to the rest of the group going to the lake, and didn't realize just how fast I was going! But my CJ handled just fine for the short distance I did it in.

Well, I am not going to give up just yet. I will go through the whole front end and steering components and we'll see if that satisfies my to where I feel safe driving it at highway speeds. If I can't achieve that then it's gone and I am on to the next toy.

I have an 86 and it is all over the road, im in same boat, what are the best options for a new box and shaft, i will at that time repace tie rod ends drop pitman arm and drag links, than on to a alignment, i can see it is out. Please help with affordable box, cant let me 17 year old drive with the way ite steers

No, has not had an alignment yet.
I know the axle u bolts are tight because I just installed the lift myself. Also, I did not notice any loose or worn components when doing the lift. I will check everything you mentioned but if all seems reasonably OK what is a good steering box for highway use?
The AGR SB1 states "steering box is not recommended for short wheel base vehicles at highway speeds" and the AGR2 states "better for highway use" but will it be sufficient for a short wheel base Jeep even though that is what they are made for?

I have had an AGR Super Box 2 on my '80 CJ7 AMC 304 for almost a year. It feels just exactly right on this lifted Jeep with 35's.

I have narrowed most of my remaining steering slack to the tilt-wheel steering column. With the Jeep static, engine running, I can turn the steering wheel a few (maybe 5-8) degrees without moving the steering shaft to the PS box.

The AGR series are expensive appliances, but also running off the road at high speed can be expensive.
