Kind of a strange thread, I guess... I am building a CJ from scratch - for 3+ years - and selected an SM465 based on it's reputation, specs, etc. But, I've never driven a Jeep (or anything) with this Transmission . Just looking for impressions - kind of what to expect.

I know that it's effectively a 3-speed, but beyond that, is it anything like, say a T-150 3-speed, e.g. long throw, kinda clunky, etc.

Thanks.

Novak Adapters web site has some good info on it, if you hav'nt already seen it. The low gear is awsome, but the long legged transmissions without Overdrive leaves a little to be desired for street use. But for a mostly trail used rig it is great. The price of adapting it is kinda steep though, add a 4 to 1 kit in the Transfer Case and it will be a great crawler.

Thanks, I'll check out Novak's site. I considered converting the 300 to 4:1, but then did the math on the current setup - a crawl ratio of 84:1 - and figured I had enough on the low end. Now, if they could convert it to a 3-speed - adding a .6:1 (Overdrive )... ;)

I have the SM465 in my CJ, and I like it. The granny gear is awesome, It shifts smoothly, stays in gear(unlike my T-4 that used to be in it) . When I'm cruising at 65 MPH the engine is taching around 3k. I wish it had a 5th gear, then it would be the perfect Transmission in my opinion.
