1979 CJ-7, 304 V-8, 3 Speed Manual Trans, Soft Top
I own a 1979 CJ7 , purchased in Phoenix in the fall of 1978. Because all Jeeps sold in the area at that time were required to meet the California emission standards, the AMC 304 V-8 came with a "smog pump" system. Over the many years since, the pump failed, and I just cut the belt and kept on trucking. The Jeep ran fine without it. Recently, I had to replace my radiator and fuel pump, and decided to remove the pump as well, as it was just in the way. The engine now runs rough, even though the rest of the smog system is still in place, and the pump wasn't operating before removal. Has anyone ever totally removed a smog system for a AMC 304 V-8, and if so, can you give me any hints or advice? Thanks in advance.:confused:
 
I also have a '79 with a AMC 304 . The previous owner removed the smog air pump and the engine runs just fine. He also removed the cat and plugged the holes in the exhaust manifold.

The smog pump just pumps air into the exhaust to let the cat break down more of the pollutants.

Did you plug the holes in the exhaust manifold?

The cats on these older engines can clog. That can cause the engine to run rough but that wouldn't start when you removed the air pump unless there was an exhaust leak you fixed.

I used to have an '82 CJ7 that had an exhaust leak. When I fixed the leak the engine wouldn't run. The problem was the cat was clogged.
 
also check the EGR valve. If the EGR is clogged it will run rough.

If you have removed the pump be sure to save the pulley. You never know what the future will bring. the pump can be replaced but the pulley is very hard to find.:cool:
 
The smog pump first appeared on all CJ 304s in 1972 as OEM equipment; its only function is to pump air into the exhaust manifold to help complete the burn of any leftover combustibles after they leave the chamber to reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. From the pump the air goes to a diverter valve which controls when air makes it to the exhaust manifold depending upon conditions. The diverter valve has a vacuum line that goes from the diverter to a vacuum source that tells the diverter what the motor is doing. I would check to make sure you don’t have a left over vac leak from the pumpectomy.
A none functioning smog pump will not effect performance.
