I hope no one thought that this was going to be a NSFW thread from the title but when I was putting my jeep back together the dipstick broke at the engine block. I had a mechanic try to fix it but his mend is not up to snuff. I am not even sure what he used. The question I have is does anyone know of a good way to fix this either by repair or replace? The second half of the tube is still stuck in the block. I have heard of people using a screw extractor to get these out. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Check with Bulltear, they have the correct replacement dip sticks with the tube for the block. There is a thread about changing the tube out but I can't find it right know.

Thanks for the post. I checked out that bull tear website all I could find was a dipstick for the AMC 304 . I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I should have wrote that in my first post.

Looks like the repair method was brazing. If it's solid and doesn't leak, I'd leave it be. If the aesthetics are the issue, clean all the old oil off and shoot some paint on it and see if it looks any better to you. Bulltear is the way to go if you decide to replace the whole part.

I've taken them out by clamping down on the tube with vice grip pliers, then tapping the pliers with a hammer to bump it up out of the hole. The engines were all out of the frame on the ones I've removed. I imagine it'd be hard to do that method with the engine in the vehicle. Might could try plenty of slick 'um sprayed on and twist the tube with locking pliers to get it loose, then pull. You can pull the oil pan and drive it out from the bottom! Talk about a bunch of trouble, labor and beer........ :chug:.
Good luck getting it out if that's the route you take.

If it wasn't leaking i would have been fine with it but it has started leaking. With my jeep i care more about it working than looking pretty. I am guessing the bulltear website just has a dipstick for the AMC 304 and i am looking for one for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I removed a broken stub by threading the inside of it with a 3/8s tap and screwed in a piece of all thread rod hooked to a chain then up through a piece of pipe, added a big washer turned down the nut and pulled it right out. Leastwise it worked for me.

I thought they had them for the six cylinder. You might give them a call.

If finding a replacement becomes a long drawn out ordeal, consider having the original repair dude finish the job you paid him for. Take it back and get him to touch up his mistake so it stops leaking. He ought to be willing to do that if he's a half way decent business guy.

Brazing is an acceptable solution to this problem, IMO. Just needs to be completed to be acceptable in this case.

yeah i might just take it back to him. The guy did it like over a year ago so it has held up for awhile. i just feel like getting a solid piece in there would be a little better and one less thing to worry about.

Are there any junk yards in your area? Any dipstick tube from an AMC AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l or 4.0 will work. Just make sure that you get the dip stick from the donor vehicle too.

Shortly after getting 'Black Betty' (360 V-8) the dipstick snapped I replaced with one from ACME but it was a little shorter than stock, not long after I bumped it when I was replacing a header gasket and it snapped off again.
Visitng a local Jeep boneyard (Mac's Jeeparts) (God Bless you Mac) I notoiced that the I-6's had a support strap holding the tube strong. So I got some plumber's tape and made my own. It's mounted to one of the valve cover bolts.

For some reason I figured that part would be easy to find lol. So I googled it of course...the only one I can find is for the V8's and the 83-86 is 189 bucks! That's crazy. Remind me never to break my oil dipstick

On another note, I have no fixes for ya, but I do have a local jeep yard that will have that part probably. I'd be willing to pick it up and ship it to you if you'd be willing to paypal me the cost. Let me know if you wanna go that route and I can see if he has that part.

Either way, good luck with it.

I broke mine off in the block as well recently. Only one I could find was $190 for a replacement. No where makes or sells them for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , could only find the AMC 304 . Your best bet is craigslist. Hell for $200 you can buy a while AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l on craigslist with the dipstick.

I ended up having to have my dad send me one from back home.

Hey techlight if you find one I would paypal you the money for it. You dont have to go out of your way to find it though. I am actually out of town right now (china) so I don't know how PayPal would work internationally. But on the plus side I did see a jeep in china.

Lol..we'll wait on the international funds transfer and shipping until your back stateside ;)

I sent him a text asking availability and price...I'll post back when I hear from him. If he has it I can grab it this weekend...I have to go back out to his place anyway so it's no trouble. Although I shouldn't be allowed out there. It's very difficult to walk around a Jeep yard and not come home with extra stuff that I don't really need, but of course "I need" haha.

Is the dipstick and tube from a 79 the same as an 84? I'm pretty sure it's not. Can someone post a stock photo or something so I know what I'm looking at.

Thanks

It is very much appreciated. This one is off the morris 4x4 website and will fit my 1985 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . And I also understand about how you find stuff that your jeep "needs".

Lol...i probably sound like a goober. My Jeep has the same dip as yours. For some reason I thought you were looking for 79 parts. I've been reading too many threads haha.

He just got back to me and says he has one. I'll PM you the details and we can figure out how and when to get it to you :) ...I'm pretty sure you don't want to pay shipping to China :D

Just to update an old thread I was able to install a new dipstick. Thanks to Techlight sending me one from I cali I was able to keep it stock. It was super easy. I literally pulled the old one out with the bottom half still attached. I had the new one in the freezer and it just slid right in. Easy thing I have ever done on the jeep.
