Street Jeep for snow and ice, still on blocks in the driveway. '73 CJ5, 258 inline six, T18 tranny, Model 20 transfer case, Dana 30/44 w/ 4.27 ratio (soon to be 3.73), original Cutlas hubs, half-cab waiting to be installed. Daily driver is a 20-year-old Mazda pickup.
After driving a 5-speed for the last several years, and 4-speeds for lotsa years before that, I'm looking forward to driving a 3-speed again.
So I was sitting in my CJ5 making engine noises with my lips while going through the gears. A-a-a-k! I found another gear up and to the right! Turns out its a 4-speed after I was SO looking forward to driving a 3-speed again for the first time since probably high school.

Sounds like the T-18 is pretty bulletproof so I'll no doubt recover from my disappointment.

Id be crying tears of joy. ;) You'll drive it like a three speed for the most part anyway.

As your CJ is a 73 most likely it is the OEM close ratio (4.01) low. The wide ratio (6.32) didn’t start in CJs until sometime in the 76 model year but no one seems to know exactly when. Wide or close who cares it is still a T-18 .

This is very true, other than to park, I hardly ever use first. Besides the fact it's not synchronized, so it's a PITA to shift out of, ans you're not down-shifting to first.

So you have not driven this CJ yet?

Up and to the right on a T-18 is reverse.

Nope. Listened to it run for quite awhile before I paid the money--long enough to NOT hear any scary engine noises, and long enough to guess that the smoke filling the garage was from overly-rich carburation and not burning oil. (Still not sure how to explain the flames from the defroster vents.)

It wasn't until I had it towed home that I learned about all the fascinating variations in these vehicles. I'm delighted about the inline six, and I'm actually pretty pleased that it has the T-18 . Man, that's a TRUCK tranny!

And I'm glad I haven't ordered my shift pattern decal yet!

Gotcha. :D

There's definitely other items waiting to be found as well ill bet. . .:D

Man, this gives me some hope.. I have two CJ5s that I haven't really messed with much since I bought them, a '76 and a '78.. the '76 is a 232ci and the '78 is a AMC 304 .. the guys I bought them from didn't really know much about them, but the guy I got the '76 from swears it was a 4-speed, although I had only found 4 positions the day i was tinkering... here's to hoping! I'm jealous!

Yep. Close ratio tranny. Depending on your intended use, a wide ratio T-18 would be an easy sway. The granny gear can be fun off road.
