So i was talking to my dad today and he decided that he likes his model 70 300 win mag and he doesnt wanna upgrade to a 300 weatherby becausee its heavier and he just likes his set up alot, so he told me instead of me going and buying him a new rifle, that i should go buy myself a new rifle because my 270 just isnt cutting it in the distant part of elk hunting. So now it is time for the reason i posted this what are your opinions on what gun i should buy?!?!? im going to go look today and possibly purchase one :D

That's kind of a hard question to answer when I don't know you. Some people can't handle rifles that other people can. Besides myself, I only have one friend who even wants to shoot my 300 short mag. For elk I pack my 300 short mag, for deer I pack my 7MM, my dad packs a .308 and my wife packs a .270.

300 H&H magnum, nuff said

i was at the NRA shooting rage the other day and was shooting my brothers M1A and it did real good at 600yards. it could kill a mule deer at that distance and was fun to shoot.

the caliber .260 is a good one, is good at long distances because its a longer bullet and has a flatter MOA

To put it simple i can handle any gun you hand me, i dont care the caliber i will shoot it HA, but to know what i like in guns, I love wood stocks and synthetics are ok depending on the caliber, but we go elk hunting and im the only one who doesnt shoot a 300 caliber or bigger, dont get me wrong my 270 is my first and only love it was my dads gun it has more value to me than the world itself its a model 70 weighs about 15 lbs lol with a old 4 power scope but at 300 yards my gun is droping over a 1ft and it doesnt have half the power that a 300 does at the yards. When we go hunting my counsin and uncle both shoot 300 weatherby mark V's and my grandpa dad and other uncle all shoot 300 win mags sooo...

I went and looked yesterday and found a 300 win mag model 70 sporter XTR for 550 which is my dads exact same gun and uncle and it has scope rings but im not 100% on what i want to get but i do know it has to be a 300 cailiber or bigger so now lets talk about this lol

a .50 BMG would do it.

Thats exactly what my buddy said lol and i check the ballistics on the 300 H & H and it wasnt better then the 300 winchester, i really would like a weatherby but im a good enough shot that i dont need to spend 900-2500 on a rifle that has a little better power. Whats any bodys thought on the Tikka 300 wsm?

.300 Win Mag - 190 grain/ muzzle velocity, 3000 / muzzle energy, 3,815

50 BMG - 709 / muzzle velocity,2,827 / MUZZLE ENERGY 12,650

Bit of a diference between a 300 and a 500, but I was just kidding.

Good thread! I've been in the market for a new rifle for a little while now. I've been looking into purchasing a .30-06 I can't afford two new rifles at once, so I figure a .30-06 would be the most versital pick for me. I've had friends tell me they've taken deer and elk down quite well with them. Warrpath4X4- you wouldn't happen to be near Yukiah would you? Went Elk hunting there a couple years back, and dirtbiking there for a week last year. Very nice area!

.30-06 is probably the all around best rifle within 250 yards after that you have to know the drop and velocity your gonna have at the distance you want to shoot but its depending on how good of a shot you are you can go alot further with it but my uncle has killed alot of elk with his 30-06 and deer so i would say go for that. I still have my eye stuck on a 300 win mag or a wsm but i just dont know yet granted if i decide to buy on an impulse it will be soon or wait till after the wedding because i might have to fork out some money for it :p im going to keep my options open and try to find a complete set up.

Good to know, thanks! I would buy it before the wedding while you still can!

I love my Pre 64 action 300 Winmag . Wouldn't trade it for nothing.
My brother is a hunting guide here in western Wyoming,& he uses a .338.
We both try to get an elk, deer, pronghorn every year. He usually does.
We use the same gun for all of the animals. Everyone's got their favorite, & it's hard to go wrong with anything .270 or bigger depending on accuracy of the shooter,& preference.
If the shot is easy i use my .44 mag. He got a .454 Casull as a tip once,& has done well with it.

I'd love to own more BIG guns, but really have no reason unless i were lucky enough to draw a Bison tag. Then i would probably go with a .50 cal. black powder. It's hard to call shooting a Bison "a hunt" most of the time.

Moose, there's not enough left to warrant talking about a gun for them. Sad.

Now, if we want to talk about shotguns,& ducks, that's a whole new game.

For long distance Elk Hunting, 300 Weatherby for sure, ballistics tell the story..

True but if you look at the ballistics between the 300 weatherby and the 300 win mag its not a very big difference, and the price cost is a BIG difference i went and looked around and it looks like i may end up going with the 300 win mag i found yesterday. Unless i can find a decent priced weatherby. or im really pondering a tikka 300 wsm, but what are you guys opinions on those?

So now new topic lol scopes, which one should i go with that wont break the bank? im thinking about the Nikon Buckmaster with the tabs in the scope that go from 100 yard to 500 yards. but would appreciate some input!

I think Bushnell gives the most pop for the Peso.
