Softer Ride

Softer Ride
Drop you TP to 25-28 psi. That's what I run in my 33's.
LG

I asked about it when I got the new tires. My tire guy said I might wear them prematurely if I go under the 35...but if I thought the ride was harsh lower it to 30 and see how it was. But it's really not bad at all running them at 35pds so I'll probably stick with that for now.

The dueler AT's I had on there were like flintstone wheels at 35pds so go figure that the BF's run pretty well at 35. They're really soft compared to the duelers (but mine were old and sunbaked). If I didn't already know how well the BF's wear, I'd probably be worried that I'd wear them out in about 30k because they feel so soft, but I'm pretty sure I'll get an easy 50k or more out of them....assuming I don't destroy them on the trail haha.

I run 8" wide rims and have very good wear pattern at 25psi. That includes flat-towing the jeep to Montana and back.
How many miles a year do you drive your jeep? That your so worried about tread life.
I have never worn out a BFG/AT. I destroy them in the rocks-:D

They don't make'em anymore because people have gotten soft and will lawyer up in a heart beat for almost anything.

well stated

My guess is you'll wear them quicker at 35 than 25. Google tire chalk test. You want you entire tire in contact with the ground. In CJ at 35lbs your probably only getting 2/3rds of that. Your jeep probably weighs about 3500-4000 lbs loaded and I think the rating on the ATs is 2250 a tire at 35lbs??? 4000/4=1000, 1000 is about half of 2250 so you can run about half of 35 lbs. Get the real numbers, do that math, do the chalk test blah blah, or just run them at 25lbs and be happy. :)

Wooly

I just had a 4 inch YJ skyjacker lift/bilsteins installed to replace the 4 inch rough country lift. Should make a HUGE difference.
+1000 on the Bilsteins. I run them on all my vehicles. Huge difference in ride quality and not at all stiff.

Your 'tire guy' is dead wrong for the weight of a CJ :rolleyes:
Your tires-Your choice.
BTW-You were talking to a 'salesman' when ask'n for that info-He wants you to come back when you wear the center out of your tread-:D

I've seen the chalk test online, but never done it. I usually go with what experienced people say. I'm pretty sure when I asked I was talking to some tire/install guy who repeats what he's learned (lol, he was definitely not a salesman).

I'll have to go back in and talk to the owner about it. He's been around my area for 30+ years in the tire business and my family has been buying tires from him for an easy 15 years...I doubt he's really trying to rob me lol, but hey, ya never know.

I'm pretty sure the Jeep would ride really nice down at 25-28 and what was posted about the weight and tire wear makes sense. This is exactly why I like this board...without it I would never have questioned what that guy said, and just ran them at 35. Now I can go fiddle with them and not worry about it.

Although, he did say something about shoulder strength/cornering/handling at running them lower might cause some trouble (but I can't remember what he said)...probably handling in corners or shoulder roll? Cant, remember, but feel free to chime in on this point too please.

I'm really just trying to get the best life out of them I can because I want to spend my money on other stuff :D ...I pray to the tire gods at each 4-wheel outing :notworthy: and burn incense in the jeep during the whole trip!

If your 33's are on 8" wide wheels. 25-28 psi is not an issue. Much better ride that at 30psi.;) BTW-When off road, I air down to 11-12psi and lower for the sand.
Your more than welcome to come over and look my tires over for wear. Rock scars don't count:eek:
I have been run'n 33" BFG's for 25+ years. Got rid of my sway-bar the day I bought the Jeep in 1985.
It's a Jeep-NOT an Audi A8. :D
Try 26psi for a week--;)

The chalk test is what it is. You can throw everything else out the window. Sidewall, flex, shoulder all of it. If the chalk is right and tested correctly then you're done.

I don't think you're tire guy is doing anything wrong, I just think it's being overthought.

I'm with these guys, do the chalk test and get the tread running flat for best ride and wear. Every type of tire will differ, My 33X12.5 MTZ's (Mickeys) like 22 lbs.
