I have 34x10.5 Super Swampers. I accidentally junked the OEM spare tire rack. Now i am looking for a reasonbly priced rack. Ultimately I would love to have a rear bumper with a receiver hitch and a swing away spare tire rack. But seems like Obama has gotten with the mfg'rs of these things because they want 600-1000 bucks for one. They jeep only cost me 2 grand to buy it. I also am looking for an A-dapter kit to add roll cage protection for the driver/passenger cabin. any ideas? I could always mount spare tire up top but i like the idea of keeping it low.

Thanks in advance for any idea's

don't suggest Kennesaw Mtn. They burned a bridge with me

well you could build one off of the factory mounts with square tubing like im gonna do. i don't think it would be to hard to build one of the bumpers with tire carrier on it.

i wish i had a pic of the back of that tj in my photographs, he had one made for him when he had an 8.8 put under his jeep. the guy that built it made the bumper, spaced it off of the back of the jeep about 2" then used a huge bolt on the pass. side to make a hinge for the triangulated tire carrier, it looks real good i might even copy it

if you are looking for a factory one i know someone fairly close to you that will have one he's in rockmart, close to cartersville if interested send me a pm and i will give you his number

Cheapjeep is on to something. If you don't want to spend over $600 you are going to have to build it yourself.
As for the roll cage, samething build it.
Remember Jeep are built not bought.

I don't think the OEM spare tire carrier was meant to support the weight of a tire over 31." The first time the rear end came down hard, you'd probably rip it off the tail gate. Unless you could find a way to reinforce it. My 2 cents. Wasn't someone on this site fabing one up? I thought I saw someone post their project.

I stand corrected then. Thanks for clarifying that. I just assumed it mounted to the tail gate because that is where my spare tire mount was located on mine (Must have been a PO upgrade:laugh::bang:), and there was no way that spot would have held up to a larger tire.

Folds down.
I'm positive it's a cj tub, it has the underseat gas tank.
My hood is blocking the tailgate in question though, Sorry.

tire doesn't mount to the tailgate on a cj, looks to me though the way the mounts are in the body you could hold a bigger tire on it

Mine did and I installed a 33" TSL on it. I did <-BAD WORD-> support to the inside of the tailgate to prevent the mounting bolts from riping through the tailgate.

To the original poster;
Building a bumper is easy some tubing a welder, a trailer stub axle and some bearings. I'll dig in my archive and find a great how to and post up when I get a chance.

Till then here's some reading:

Pic's of an example I dug up.
Here's the stub and below is the completed project.

If I did this right, here's some shots of the carrier currently on my CJ. It's made of square tubing (1" I.D., 1 1/4" O.D.). I'm carrying a 32 x 11.5, but I think it would handle a lot more weight.

Lower Hinge:

The hinges and latch plate are through-bolted with a backing plate inside the tub. This was on the CJ when I bought it, so "Origin Unknown".

If you pay shipping from Michigan I have one in my garage that you can have. I kept it from my last CJ7 and it's been taking up space.

Hi!

I too need bumper and over sized sparetire swingaway carrier for my 1986 CJ7 . I had to torchcut off my junk bumper and I'm NOT good at welding. I saved a lot of money restoring my jeep myself so I don't mind buying one. My question is; Has anyone bought anything from LoD Offroad? They have one a few hundred dollars cheaper than Warn. I just don't want a cheap product. Help if you can.

Thanks!
