Anyone have any suggestions for speakers in an 86 CJ7 ? I am thinking I would like to have some that are mounted to the fenderwells in the back, maybe some that are weather resistant like maybe for boats. I would like to have some good ones, but I know that the better they are the shorter time I will have them as they will probably disappear. Also, there are vented spots on either side of the dash panel that would be ideal locations for front speakers. What size would go there? Thanks.

I think the dash speakers are 4".
Thorwon used 50cal ammo cans to put speakers in and bolted them to the rear fender wells. I thought that was kind of cool. check his gallery and see if he still has the pictures up.

That could possibly deter theft for reasons other than the inconvenience of unbolting them. Maybes the potential theif would think twice if they knew that I was packing. Thanks for the reply, IO. I think you have answered every one of my posts (no matter how silly the questions are) since I bought my jeep 2 weeks ago. Thanks.

If they had been real silly I wouldn't have answered them.

I used the smaller m16 ammo cans and hung them under the seat with zip ties, you can't even see em, you would have to really look to know i even have a radio and speakers in mine. Only draw back to it though is it limits the seat travel when you fold em, but I took my backseat out so I just access the back from the rear window.

Drooooid...2

Very neat idea, but I am going to have to get a backseat at some point. The kids want to ride too. I will probably attach some kind of bracket to the fenderwell and rely on the honesty of others for my speakers not to disappear.

It would have to rain side ways.:D
I put a piece of "weed cloth" in front of the speaker to help keep out the mud and water. The truth of it is that Jeep speakers are good for 2 maybe 3 years if you are lucky.
I like the ammo cans for the way they look.

I keep trying to figure a way to put luvers in the side of the ammo can.

I've got the 5.25s in the dash and a pair of 6x9s in Thor speaker wedges. I have an Alpine deck and they make this mini-amp that puts 45W RMS to each speaker. It's more than enough volume for an open top Jeep. I put it in my Tuffy center console.

If you wanted some low end bass, you should put a mono amp under the rear seat and get an 8" for the rear. You can send the power cable from the battery under the tub. Bolt the bottom of the box to a bracket that connects to the rear bracket of a fixed rear seat. To secure everything in the rear, buy a bolt lock from Tuffy and place it on the front part of the seat bracket.

It's a good secure setup for good sound.

Security Bolt Locker for any vehicle bolt up to a 9/16? diameter on trucks, cars, SUVs, motorcycles, heavy equipment, and other vehicles.

When I bought my '85, the previous owner had mounted 6x9s in particleboard enclosures to the top of both fender wells. They seemed to be always be getting in the way, of gear I wanted to throw in the back, so I removed them. I bought the speaker wedge boxes by 'Vertically Driven Products'. They mount between the vertical bar on the roll bar and the front of the fenderwell. They are mounted with a screw, but even without that they fit so tightly somebody would have to really work to remove them. I used the same old Pioneer 6x9s that came with the Jeep. Any modern speaker that uses plastic rather than paper will be reasonably water resistant, albeit maybe not fully exposed in a downpour.

When I redo my radio, I'm going all marine. They make a lot of good stuff for boats now an its all waterproof to some degree. For speakers I'm thinking wake board tower speakers, mounting them on the roll bar.
