speedo gear

hey guys,i need to replace the speedometer gear in my '75 CJ5 and am wondering if there's a certain tool required to get the old one out,or maybe just a thin wall socket.i replaced the cable last year before i took it off the road to begin a complete rewire.the needle was bouncing back and forth so i'm thinking the gear is in need of replacing now.thanks in advance.

Was it still bouncing after the cable change? It sounds like the cable is binding somewhere. It's pretty uncommon that the gear is the culprit.

Not trying to highjack your post, but I just replaced my speedo and my needle bounces back and forth. Could it be the cable causing that?

Yup, especially if the cable was not lubed.

I don't know why, but jeep speedo's seem to bounce, my '80 had a bouncy speedo and my'75 has a somewhat bouncy speedo, both had lubricated cables. I once had an MGB GT that also had a bouncy speedo.

Yup, especially if the cable was not lubed.

What do you lube it with?

It can be lubed with most anything. penetrating oil to heavy grease. I like to take the cable out and soak it in warm 90 weight over night so It will get soaked into the strands.
