I have an aftermarket speedometer for my '74. I am trying to get the speedo to work properly. There are times when it will read, but its saying im doing 40 when im going abour 5. Other times it will turn all the way around like a clock. The odometer reads fine, the cable spins easily. I removed the cluster from the dash, and spun the brass on the back. It seems like theres an intermittent catch. Not sure if this can be solved with taking apart and cleaning or just replacing the entire unit.

If the unit does need replaced what would be the most accurate speedometer? Im currently using my smart phone with a digital HUD app. It works well, but obviously uses my phone battery and data to work.

I was able to fix it. I took it apart, spun it with a drill and it seems to be working fine, without fluctuation. When i get up around 45-50 its a few mph off, but its good.
