It is straight stock with a factory v8 with 23,000 original miles
So I'm new to the forum, thanks for all the help guys. And back into Jeeps after a 30 year absence. I recently bought a 74 CJ5 with 23,000 original miles, it is all stock and has a AMC 304 . As I am going through it I notice this frame mounted spring stop and the leaf spring is resting on it.
Should I just take it off?- I don't see it on any pics I have found on the forum
Does this mean I need new springs?
I would rather not lift the jeep but I can feel that there is really no suspension in the front.
This just doesn't make sense so I think somethin ain't right.
Thanks

I'm not sure which of us has our terminology mixed up but I've always thought that was called a spring stop doohickey. There should be a regular bumpstop at the axle. I've only seen this spring stop doohickey on older CJ5s (and old Pickups) but not all old CJ5s have it.

I would remove it. Then check the shackes to see if you have too much spring sag. Post a pic if you are not sure.

Thanks, I was kind of thinking along the same lines. There is a spring stop on the frame but the axle could never get close to it with the dohicky on there. I will give it a go and see what happens.

The logic behind the spring stop doohickey is to slow down the suspension before your axle hits the main bumpstop. If you are resting on the spring stop doohickey it is not helping out your suspension.
It is very posible that your springs are sagging but we will find out for sure when you remove the spring stop doohickies. I really think you are better off without them anyway.

I agree, you should get more suspension travel with out it.

My 73 had them as well. They never touched the springs just sitting with stock springs.
