It is straight stock with a factory v8 with 23,000 original miles
Thanks, I was kind of thinking along the same lines. There is a spring stop on the frame but the axle could never get close to it with the dohicky on there. I will give it a go and see what happens.

The logic behind the spring stop doohickey is to slow down the suspension before your axle hits the main bumpstop. If you are resting on the spring stop doohickey it is not helping out your suspension.
It is very posible that your springs are sagging but we will find out for sure when you remove the spring stop doohickies. I really think you are better off without them anyway.
 
I agree, you should get more suspension travel with out it.
 
My 73 had them as well. They never touched the springs just sitting with stock springs.
