A couple of days ago I went through a big puddle of mud and since then ive been having problems with my rig running. I'll turn it on and if i don't keep my foot on the gas it will end up dying. Until it warms up it will sometimes stay on , if she feels like it. Another thing I noticed is, I'll be able to drive her around but while doing so its like my carb is starving for gas and it will sputter. WHen i start coming to a stop or let off on the gas she will at times back fire, then just end up dying. So i have to turn it on again, and the same problem happens. When ever i start letting off the gas and its under 10 mph she will die. And there is back firing from the exhaust every now and then. I changed the spark plugs, dist cap and rotor today. Problem still occuring. I'm guessing the water and mud is the problem because prior to that she was running just fine.

Any ideas guys?? Thanks for the help in advance!

Well I was going to say you got water in the dizzy. You may want to leave the cap off for a day or two if its points. They def. dont like water.

Sorry, silly question but what's the dizzy??

If it is not the distributor being wet then you might have got water and mud in the carb

You might try taking the distributor cap off and spraying WD40 on the inside of it. The distributor not the cap since it's new.

you know I always thought it was stupid when people called it that until I typed it and realized its easier.

I thought about water down the carb but it shoulda just sucked it through. Not like water or mud could have gotten INTO the carb.

I agree with mtnwhlr spray some WD40 in the dizzy bet it make it run. Did you know WD40 means Water Displacement 40th formula just a fun fact for you.

:)I would not be a big fan of spraying WD-40 in the distributor not from the standpoint that it may displace water but it attracts dirt and dust. Take some air and dry it out.
Also did you look at your air cleaner? Maybe full of dirt from the water and mud and dried inside............change it if you already haven't. Sounds like the motor is going lean..........

So she is no longer stalling anymore. I took off the carb took her apart and cleaned her up with some carb cleaner. I did mention that i replaced the "drizzy" :p spark plugs and rotor. Now the problem i have is, she seems to be idling fine when i hit the gas pedal for the choke.

The question I have now is, is it possible for her to be idling but still be running rich?? Cause now i have to constantly hit the gas pedal when coming to a stop so she can idle. I've messed around with those two front screws on the carb which i imagine those are the mixture screws. Is there anything else that could be causing her to run rich cause i am also getting a bit of sputtering when i begin to stop, not a lot , but it is noticeable.

Typically those need to be 1.5 turns out from fully closed/in. Be careful with them and never tighten them fully. What you are aiming for is the best idle you can get. So keep opening them up equally until the idle is at its highest point; then adjust the idle to the proper speed.

Its possible you are still having a small ignition problem that will work itself out as the distributor finally dries out.

Is this an auto or manual?

You should be able to recreate the problem on a manual by just holding the rpms up a little and when you snap the throttle shut it tries to stall.

This may just be the idle being set a little low also.

If you didn't actually use something to poke through the jets, it's possible they are still clogged a little. Also, a rebuild may not be a bad idea. Rebuilt mine and cleaned out the jets real well, haven't had to touch the carb in over a year
