have a 84 jeep CJ7 with a a chevy 350 motor, and when the engine warms up it stalls out and looses power untill the engine cools, i noticed the main starter cable was a little loose so i fixed it , but upon test drive it still stalled and was hard to get started again,

i noticed once it fired up it was back firing (which it never does) what do you think would be the problem.
 
Is the 350 carberated or EFI ? What kind of ignition ?
 
when you say it loses power, do you mean the entire vehicle such as lights and radio, or just the engine circut, such as the starter will not turn?
 
well thats a tuff one because i dont have a stereo and its day time when im testing it. i do know the battery gauge is dead when it happens and theres no power to even crank the motor . once the engine cools it usually starts right back up ,
ive already replaced the battery , had the alternator checked,
 
ok, so what is happening is that once the engine warms up to a certain temperature, the battery gauge goes dead?
would you do another thing for us, go out and start it, once it goes dead see if the lights go on, or if anything electrical works, if some does and others do not, tell us.
 
Have you changed or added anything recently that could cause this? New carb, starter, fuse box, etc.? The fact that after sitting it will restart I think is the key. I am assuming you are not charging or jumping it to get it started, it just starts working after sitting? How long does it have to sit? What sound does it make when you try to restart it. Is it a slow crank, a hard click, a series of small clicks, or no sound at all? I would also be interested in battery voltage with the jeep running (idle and high idle1.5-2k rpm) and after it stalls with the key off. The key is to isolate it to a specific area. Rule out what is working.
 
When this happens does the starter click or is it compleatly dead?
Also when it quits is it all at once?
 
i'm going to take a shot in the dark on this one, and tell you to check if you've still got power when it shuts off to pull the ign mod and coil out of the dist. and have them tested. your local parts store can/will check them for free. i had an ign mod go out in an old chevy pickup one time and when it would heat up it would quit running but the module itself would get hot on the bottom of it. just an easy suggestion without knowing anymore about your jeep
 
I was driving at a loose main grounding cable. humm we may never know if the original poster does not come back
 
I'm betting the starter solenoid is bad. Chevy starters always have a bad problem with heat soak in confined places. My thought is the sol. is breaking contact when it warms up, and "repairing" itself as it cools.
Simple solution for that. Replace the starter and/or sol. Then either cover the exhaust with heat wrap, or shield the starter from the heat with a piece of tin.
 
Shouldn't- yes. Couldn't - no. If the sol. is shorting to ground when it gets warm, it would kill all power to the vehicle, and cause the battery gage to peg to zero (as the PO mentioned).
Without a fuse to protect it, you would never know its shorted until it starts a fire.
Might and might not be the problem, agreed. But theoretically, it could happen.
 
sorry for the delay yall, yeh i havnt really changed anything like i said when it would stall out , i would try to turn the key to start it at first it would crank and try to start, after a few tries it stops doing anything and i checked all the connections on the battery all the spark plugs and found that the big starter cable was a little loose and touching another terminal on the starter. i tightened it and today ran it for about 20 mins in the driveway just ideling and it had no problems , so im thinkin thats what was the problem.
 
Have the parts house check the starter before you replace it!!
There are plenty of places for you to spend money on this thing, don't do it if you don't have to.

Orange, that was not being dumb, it taught about troubleshooting. That is how you learn. and remember the only dumb question is the one you do not ask and regret, all others have merit.
