Hi, I'm new to this site. I have a 78 CJ7 with a AMC 304 and I recently changed the starter, solenoid, and key switch

Sorry, and the starter keeps hanging up on me. When I disconnect the hot side of the solenoid and let it sit and hook it back up it stops hangin up until I turn the key again. Trying to take rig out this weekend.

Hanging up as in continuing to run after you let go of the switch? or are you talking about it wont disengage from the flywheel? If the starter is continuing to run after you let go of the switch you will have to diagnose if it is the ignition switch continuing to power it or if the starter solenoid is getting stuck closed. if the starter gear is just stuck spinning with the flywheel you will have to diagnose if the starter is misaligned or if the starter is junk, IE the return spring not dis engaging the starter gear from the flywheel :chug:

Hanging up as in turn key to start, the motor cranks and will just keep cranking until I pull the positive off the battery. The starter isn't stuck on flywheel, it retracts when I pull off power.

Yes then I first changed the starter and solenoid and when I did that it cranked fine at first then it hung up again. Now I just changed the key switch and it cranked fine at first then it hung up again. I am also having problems with my coil resistor, could this have anything to do with it

The coil resistor wont effect the the starter but a mis adjusted ignition switch and or worn ignition linkage will cause this problem :chug: maybe you can crank it aand pull on your linkage rod to the ignition switch to see if it will stop?

Changed the key switch again it would bump over just fine but if I tried cranking it for more than a few seconds it would hang up. I think I'm just gonna wire a switch with a push button start. Preciate everyone's help.

Try not removing the battery cable, give the selonoid a smack with a small hammer or handi tool. If it stops the selonoid is your problem. Also your stater isn't made to run even at engine idol speed. Sorry, but your starter might be damaged too.

Replacing the switch will not cure the fault if you have already fitted a replacement key switch , , sounds very much like the starter motor itself is faulty or out of alignment if it is only getting "hung up" under load,.. take out the starter and bench test it and see how it reacts when current applied , ,,,does it return properly ??etc , If it is "hooking up" under load only , surely it is mis aligned , snagging ??? broken bearing in the starter maybe , ?
