Starter making noise

Do these starters have spacing shims?Since I put in a new clutch my starter has been making a noise when it engages.My buddy took the starter off and put it on so I am not sure if it had a shim in it or not.Dont remember seeing one but that dont mean there wasnt one.

No. There shouldnt be any shims.
I had some strange noise at one time after replacing my clutch and when I investigated, I found the inspection plate bolts were loose and the plate was rattling like an angry snake when the starter would engage.

with the horizontal mounting bolt you can't use shims to space it down and away from the flywheel, like on a chevy where the bolts are vertical.
