And finally a 1981 jeep cj7 258 hardtop
I went to crank the jeep and it cranked. Next day went to crank it, the selinoid stuck and had to disconnect the battery. I bought a new selinoid it doesnt work at all! tapped on the other noew selinoid and installed it, it doesnt work either. Jumped the selinoid with a screwdriver the jeep cranks up?????

the ignition switch mounted on the lower column would be my thought

OK then what do I do? Why did one of the selinoids work fine then get stuck? Is it wired up correctly?

How did you jump the solenoid? If you shorted between the two big cables then you sent the battery voltage directly to the starter. If that works you are only testing the starter.
Try shorting the two smaller wires on the solenoid. That will try to turn on the solenoid. If that works then the problem is before the solenoid. That would be a bad ignition switch.

If it's the ignition switch then what is the part I need? I work at orielly and can get the part.

Did you replace the ignition switch because that's what I think it is.?

In the above picture, did you try to short the 2 smaller wires? That should test the solenoid and starter.

your other thread "starter switch" you stated you moved the ignition switch with a screwdriver
the whole component or where the rod goes into it ?

when you install the igntion put as high as the bolts on the column will allow you to, then turn to start.....you should feel the springback
note: the lock cylinder does not spring back
the ignition switch on the column springs back
that would be your clear indication that it is in the right position

is this a manual or automatic ?
original column or from a donor vehicle?
reasons:
if an automatic then there MIGHT be the neutral safety switch that you mentioned on an other thread
if from donor vehicle some of the contacts on the ignition that you picked up MAYBE different
but no worries your computer at work should be able to cross any numbers you find on the old switch?

Just thought of something, the whole time I'm trying the switch out i'm outside the vehicle kneeling down. I wasn't pushing the clutch in. No wonder it didn't work.

this starter switch is a pain in the <-BAD WORD-> to install. Every time I get that little rod in the hole it pops out when I go to bolt it down to the column. Having to do all this by feel too since it's so far under the dash. I'm thinking of taking out the whole column!

so you woke up in the middle of the night and go......"doh"
happens to me all the time :D

Pushing the clutch in didn't make any difference, It still doesn't work. I can jump the starter but can't get anything from the switch on the column. It's time to break out the ohm meter

Let me ask again. How did you jump the starter?

First of thank you very much for everyone that jumped in on this one to help me out. Yall are a great bunch of people on here and I owe you all a cold beer. Just come to my house in Texarkana Texas, bring your swim suits and lets chill.

An ohm meter is your best friend.
Never assume new parts are good especially when there are several components to an electrical system that you are checking. EX: starting system
An ohm meter is your best friend
The brand new selinoid was bad.
It wasn't the clutch pedal that needed to be depressed.
The starter is good
An ohm meter is your best friend
I got my jeep cranked
I have a spare starter switch
you cannot install a starter switch in a jeep CJ7 upside down.
I'm going to install my bikini top and drink another cold beer.

Once again Thank you very much to all that helped me out. I hope one day I can return the favor. I work at orielly so if there is anything you want me to look up off the wall for you pm me.

Oh yea, it matters which side you put the red and blue wire on the starter selinoid

installing the igntion
you have to be a 3 foot contortionist
have plenty of beer ready for after
have your pastor/ priest on phone so you can ask forgiveness for what you said during
dont use your good tools ( your goin to throw SOMETHING across the yard)
and have plenty of band aids at arms length

did i forget something?

You need to learn my favorite thing to say when my wife walks out in the shop. honey hold my beer, or honey do me a favor and turn the engine over, while pushing the clutch in!!!
