starter switch

I changed it tonight now it won't do anything. I changed selinoids nothing. I jumped the selinoid it started. I can't get this starter switch installed either. There is a rod that comes down from the key that activates the switch. I moved the switch with a screw driver and nothing. Put the old switch back in, nothing. On another note, now the starter stays engaged when I jump it and it starts up. Is the starter bad? It works but just doesn't disengage.
