I have 80 CJ7 v8...and today I was leaving work and try to crank the jeep. It clicked one time and then wouldn't do anything. The I tried it again...and it fired right up. So when I got home I let it sit for about 30 minutes and tried to start it...and it did nothing at all. Luckley I was parked on a hill and rolled it and pop the clutch...and cranked fine. Well... as I'm driving down the street.. I noticed that my radio had lost memory. So I'm thinking the battery is shot. So I parked it and waited a few minutes and it fired right up. If it was the battery it would work or not work...right?

I put a solenoid and all new cables on it about 2 months ago. All cables are tight and the solenoid is grounded.

Any ideas?

solenoid is cheap so i would try there first
but turning the key and nothing ?
possible ignition switch ( column mounted not key)??

sorry
losing memory on radio?
my work van does that when the negative wire on the battery is loose
just saying:chug:

Even with new cables.....check the connection again. Dang things are stupid-touchy and i take a wire post cleaner to them often. Also check the connection at the starter motor...

I am in fayetteville almost every weekend and have a volt meter.......if needed

My guess is a bad battery.
Take it out and any parts store can do a load test. It may charge to over 12 volts but when it is trying to crank the engine it's voltage may drop drastically. That's why the radio looses memory - it lost voltage.

Either bad battery or bad connection would be my guess.

Update on my starting issue.

Crank the jeep up this morninng with no problems. Been driving it all day and it's fired up every time.

Now I'm really confused!

Sounds like Old Dog and CJim7 were right. It must be a bad connection. Grab each cable on the battery and see if you can twist it. Or it could be a bad connection on the starter solenoid or starter itself. (I think battery cables are most likely)

Update on jeep.

Jeep would not crank today. Checked all cables and all are tight. I jump it off and took it to the parts store to have the battery tested. It was tested with the jeep turned off.

It says replace battery. But... also it's putting out 13 volts.

If it's putting out 13 volts why would it need to be replaced?

Oh...another thing ...it fired right up after it was tested.

Load test.
I have a flashlight that almost puts out 13 volts but it's not going to start your jeep. If you were to test the voltage on the battery when you are trying to start your jeep you will see the voltage drops to just a few volts when the battery is under load.
The test they do at the auto parts store is a load test. It checks to see if the battery can keep it's voltage up under load.

WOW... That's pretty cheap for a bat man, especially considering your getting plenty of use out of it!
