Starting Problems, Help Needed

I just picked up this 1984 CJ7 almost 2 weeks ago. It was driven 1 1/2hrs to me, and ran up until I changed plugs and fuel filter... Immediately after installing the plugs and filter, it fired right up, until I noticed one of the filter clamps was loose, and spitting fuel everywhere. I shut it down, and since it hasn't wanted to fire...
Specs:
AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a "weber" 34 dgec conversion
I'm gettin fuel to the carb. I'm getting spark. I can spray starter fluid down the carb and it'll fire up for a second or two, then sputters off... From what I'm reading the 34 DGEC isn't a true weber, it was manufactured by Interco with licensing from Weber... I've not read the most comforting opinions or reviews on this carb, and debating on swapping it out... I have several MC2100s sitting around in my parts pile, I could easily rebuild and swap on, or I've debated ordering just the carb of a Weber 32/36 progressive unit....
Any help, suggestions etc... is appreciated. I've been building cars for over 16 years, but I've primarily focused on antique fords, old Ramblers, and also newer Jeeps with the 4.0. Webers are new to me....
