I've been working on the steering column of my 79 CJ5 . I need this grommet. It goes between the tube and the collar as it passes threw the dash. Not sure of it's proper name. I'm having trouble locating one. Any help?

I see what you are pointing at but think you may be mistaken. The black peice is a cover that goes on the dash to cover the big hole that is left there. The grommet or seal that goes between the mounting plate and fire wall is #30 on that list.

1976-1986 Jeep CJ & 1987-1995 Wrangler YJ SEAL FOR COLUMN TO

I have never seen a grommet or seal that goes between the cover and steering column itself.

#30 is the gasket that is down at the firewall bracket.

I could use one of those, myself.:D

He may be pointing at something else but I don't think that is it.

Looks like the gap betwen the column and cover :dunno:

I guess we will have to wait for the man who owns the finger.:laugh:

Yup, I'm looking for something that fills that gap. The tube flops around at the bottom. Seems like there should be some sort of grommet to fill this gap and hold the bottom of the tube. I'd send you a picture but it was missing when I got the Jeep. I just picked up the collar from the internet to replace the "wowie" chrome plate that didn't hold the bottom of the tube either.

What ever you come up with will be of your own design. Jeep was happy with the gap. I will say that the same trim on a later model tilt wheel is quite snug, in fact maybe even a bit small.

What holds the bottom of the tube solid? I'm obviously missing something.

Ah ha!.. There are 2 bolts that hold the steering colum tight. If you look up from the bottom you should see 2 bolts that go through a metal bracket. Thats how you tighten it.. Ill try to get some pics of it. that part that you show is just a cover.

Here you go.. Heres the bracket on the steering column. The silver square peices on have bolts that go through em to attach it to the bracket that goes from the fire wall to the column.

And here is the bracket that it attaches to. If you have the cover off you should be able to see the brackets. Sorry but the garage is to dark to get a good pic of the bracket in the jeep. The hole is where the brake pedal goes through the silver washers are the bolts that hold the column to that bracket. Sorry but i cant get it to flip and stay when I add it to the post so its upside down.

I think those aluminum squares tend to crack and fall apart causing alot of slop in the column.

Here's a picture of the hole going threw the dash. The tube, itself barely protrudes threw the hole. There needs to be something to hold the bottom of the tube solid.

by tube are you referring to the plastic trim on the column that the lock is molded in? Or the tube that the bearings are inside of for the steering shaft.

Here's my last bit of information that I can add before I'm out of ideas. There are a total of 8 bolts that secure the steering column inside the cab. The 2 that you have pictured, 4 that bolt the plate to the fire wall and 2 more on that plate tha clamp the column to the plate If your column is loose or moving around then one of those bolts are loose or your aluminum blocks are bad. Is it a tilt wheel? Could you be mistaking a loose tilt part for a loose column or is you're actual column moving?

As far as the bushing for the cover goes there is not one, never made one so ou are not missing one. Those covers are normally plastic and make no difference if they are in place or not. I've seen plenty of jeep with out them. To prove they are non supportive look at how they are attached. 4#8 or 10 screws. If you figure out a way to stabilize it by makin a bushing for the plastic peice then you are setting your self up for a horrible failure. Please for the love of other people on the road fix it right before it decides to make a right turn on its own and crashes through a bus stop full of nuns causing the pope to put out a decree that jeeps are unholy vessels for the devil and Al Sharpton forms a million habit march causing all old jeeps to be locked up.

Sorry I may have gotten off topic.

Heres I noted your pic up a little

Bolt #1 attaches the column to the tub

Bolt #2 attaches the bracket to the column ( I think theres 4 of them)

And last but not least the aluminum spacers.. It looks like its all there and tight in the picture. If you have any other movement from the column it could be from the joint in the tilt mechanism if you have one.

Sorry guys. I'm outside putting things back together, paint is dry now. I don't know all the terms so I'm having a hard time asking this question. Give me a little time to reassemble the column and I'll post a video of the problem. I sure appreciate all your efforts!

That tube? does it move around when the column is NOT installed ?

reason would be that it maybe internal steering column bolts that are loose

If the wheel flexes side to side (not rotates) inside the column, you have a bad upper shaft bearing, or a cracked tube at the bearing mount. Pull the wheel off to inspect.

If the column itself flexes or rattles, it's the support/ mount as others have described already. Mine originally was missing the two bolts to secure the column to the brackets. Tube was a little sloppy in the bracket somehow.

If their is "play" in the steering, it could be the upper, lower column bearings, tilt bearings, or steering box joint.

Definitely inspect it further. Steering is big deal.

Are you looking for a seal that goes between the firewall mounting plate, and the column?
