I have 79 CJ5 . Replacing the gear box with OMIX-ADA 18001.01 manual steering.
(this should be an exact replacement)!
The old and new look exactly the same.
EXCEPT if i rotate the pitman arm left to right (or vise-versa) and count the number of times the steering shaft rotates it's a different ratio.
THe old: Steering shaft rotates 6X
The new: Steering shaft rotates 3X

Any Ideas?
Stuck once again.

Omix-Ada is China junk. Return it-;)
Go to NAPA, and order their top of the line.

LOL yea i read CJ replacements have three different ratios. I bought it a year ago. but just got around to installing the front and steering. I turned in ticket to OMIX.

Send it back and get one from your local parts store or Rock Auto.

Only use Omix or Crown when necessary, as in no other option. I have had an issue with almost everything if theirs I have purchased.

You could get your old one rebuilt-I got one for my 81 suburban once rebuilt and worked great

Shawn, your steering ratio is 17.5.1 constant ratio.
I would question some shops that rebuild PS boxes
I was in my local machine shop to buy some different size ball bearings for the box I was rebuilding. The owner (a friend) asked what I was rebuilding, when I mentioned a PS box he looked surprised and said he didn't relize they were different size balls (he had been rebuilding sag boxes for a few years).
He is a good machinist, the ball bearings are slightly different in size and can be missed even though they have a slightly different color to them.
My thinking, if he missed them, chances are some other rebuilders may be missing them as well.
Installing the balls in the wrong order won't cause your box to fail in the short term however, it could be a problem done the road.
Rebuilding the box doesn't take any special tools and it's not too hard of a job to do yourself.
Oh, the different size ball bearings is for fluid passage.
Somewhere on this site I posted a box rebuild.

Just got finished REMOVING a brand new lower tulip coupling off of my steering shaft. At least 1/8" play side to side. A Crown part, put the original coupling back on, gotta say I'm real disappointed in Crown quality.

That crown part probably works great on a Chinee built Jeap :(

This part is a 12:1 . Omix has a good support ticketing system. I turned in a ticket. They pulled the same part of the shelf. They noted that i should test the ratio by turning the steering shaft end, not the pitman arm. And that it will be tight. They were able move it the correct arc. So i attached the bell shaped spline at the steering shaft. And low and behold the shaft turned 3X sort of stop mid arc; i continued to turn the remainder of the arc. And then back again.
It was just freaking new and tight!
