steering shot - "upgrade" vs OEM advice

steering shot - "upgrade" vs OEM advice
Re: steering shot - "upgrade" vs OEM advice

Guys while we are on the subject of the great Saginaw box, I was wondering if they came with different steering ratios. I got a rebuilt Cardone box from N.A.P.A. and it does seem to have a looser steering ratio than the CJ box that I had to begin with.

Fantastic.. Why didn't I read this earlier today?! After talking with the very nice and helpful guy at PSC, I decided that I would just buy a remanufactured gear box from NAPA.

The guy a PSC basically said that they couldn't do anything other than rebuild the gear box and install ports for hydraulic assist. I don't need hydraulic assist and it would be $200ish to rebuild it. A box from NAPA was $140. Hopefully its just as good as the OEM one..

Thank you boys for the help, shipping my steering box off today to be rebuilt.

We ordered one and it didn't line up anyway seems as if new boxes are not the way to go...

Years ago they used castor oil and ground up shells
The shells would mix with the oil and flow to the leak and clog it.
Now they use petroleum distillate = mineral spirits, kerosene, white spirits, naphtha, and stoddard solvents.
Petroleum distillate works by softening and swelling the seal, depending on the condition of the seal petroleum distillate can disintegrate the seal as well.
If your seal is too far gone stop leak most likely won't help, but if your seal is in fair condition, our like LG use it on a new pump, it should do it's job.
I think the products are getting better, and will continue to improve.

Kind of like your platelets in your blood. The help stop up the hole till the fluid around it coagulates.

Total rebuild with shipping cost $335 - they had to replace the shaft as well inside of it that cost $55 more....shipping sucks

Late update on my steering gear box replacement.. The $140 Napa gear box bolted right on and seems to be as good as OEM. The new gear box and the Borgenson HD steering shaft really tightened up the steering.

I am back offshore for work but will finish up installing my "custom" steering stabilizer setup when I get home. Ill do my best to remember to post of a picture of it when I'm done.

Adding the Borgenson HD steering shaft to my CJ was one of the best moves I ever made. Strong, smooth and easy to work with. Mostly it got rid of that funky bell affair at the gear box.
