Electrical Step on the brakes....about every light BUT the brake lights come on??

Hey all...... On my '77 CJ5 , when I step on the brakes, I get no brake lights but the front parking lights, side marker lights, and the in speedo head turnsignal indicators all light up... any ideas? Thanks, Dave

CJ wiring is finiky. If this just started, almost all problems can be traced to poor grounds. I would start there..

Grounds are a good place to start. Also make sure the correct bulbs are installed. An 1156 in a 1157 socket will do strange things, Ron.

Thanks guys. I suspect grounds or I was told the directional signal switch? Those have never worked since I’ve owned it. ‘77 Levi (Edition) ’s CJ5 that the previous owner had for 38 years. Hadn’t run in 3-4 years. I’ve got her running great now. Still have some electrical gremlins. Thanks

Didn't know the turn signals did not work. That could be part of the problem, time to get a DVM and a schematic and start working from the tail lights forwards...

Thanks. Do the taillights ground through the tub connection or is there a ground jump wire?? I ordered a TSM. Thanks!

Depends on how many times the lights have been replaced and with what type. Factory ground is light to the tub. Many ground issue problems are fixed by adding / cleaning / checking grounds from bat to frame / engine / main tub / fenders / dash / each light / grill / steering column etc.

A good test is to run a long wire from neg battery and check each light one at a time.

This Jeep is pretty much unmolested original except for the column mounted oil/ temp/ voltage/ fuel gauges.

It sounds like someone installed the wrong flasher. If you have LED bulbs they require an electronic flasher. If the bulds are mixed, some LEDs & some incandescent bulbs the flasher can get confused.
