Hey guys, me again!

On my 82, AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ... Not sure if my is a Computer Carb or not, it does have a butt load of vacumm ports and stuff... but it is running kind of bad, dosnt idle right sometimes... but then it will idle fine and runs good. I am thinking that it needs rebuilt. I know the electric choke is jacked up on it.

But I have the same carb, that came off of a 80 CJ5 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ... I'm thinking that the 80 carb is before the computer version... can I put that carb on my 82... what would i have to change to do so?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Yeah, I did some research yesterday and when I got home I double checked and No it is not Computer Controlled... So I am going to check into changing the Intake and Carb out.

Thanks

Hi,

Just put a bunch of info on your other post...... Your "does not idel/run well sometimes" could be the intermittent ground discussed in your other post playing havic with you ignition. Grounds will help you, esp if you did not leave the key in RUN with the engine not running.... that would strongly point to poor gounds a major weak link to the CJs.. ALL CJs need aux grounds ..... read up on JeepHammers Aux Grounds write up and do them...

The 1982 CJ was a computer control engine and started 1981, year earlier, in CALFORnia. The computer control stuff changed the carb settings and the advance curve... I suggest add the aux grounds and do the TEAMRUSH cap upgrade by JeepHammer and it will add 20% pep, mileage, RPMs (1000) to a pretty well running engine. Do this stuff to a engine not running well and you will think someone changed out the whole thing...

Take your distributor cap off and rotar..... Look close with a light and you will see a small hole in the metal plates and you can see the mech advance slots down below.. The slots will be stamped with the mech advance limit amount for those slots. Computer distributors will have 5 and 8 degreees on two different slots. THE NON Computer distributors will have 13 and 18 degree slot stamps... Since you do not have feedback carb prev owner could have changed the distributor also.... The easiest way is to phone order 2 or so Remanufactured Cardone Jeep Distributors for a 1979 Jeep..... They ship comp and non computer as the same part so you have to look in the same hole to get the 13/18 mech slots/stamps... That will make your jeep runs tons better since you need 30-35 deg of total advance to run RIGHT and having TEN less is a huge deal.... Cost of the Remaned Jeep Distributor is $50 and they usually have lifetime warranty and the auto stores can have them in the next day........ readily avail anywhere....

That is what I would do... Initial advance will be 4-8 deg with the correct distributor....

Get a rebuild for your carb but do the above stuff first... Then clean your carb..

Also nice to know how many miles on your engine.. Do a compression ck so you can see the health of your engine... This give you and me a good Ideal of what can be expected from the engine....

After you do that and running well the stock distributor can be tunned or the advance curve is fully adj too.

Wow!
I am going to print all this off and get check it all out this weekend, and diff run some Grounds.

Thank you for all the info.
