1979 CJ5 Renegade 258, t-18 pretty much stock except for a later model aluminum intake manifold and Gronk 2150.
So we bought a pretty decent OEM WS frame after our experience with a Crown replacement ws frame (I've reached out to Crown; more on that later) and we ran into a little problem. The Torx bolts holding the hinges on are stuck but good. Someone tried to take them out before me and chewed them up a little. I know I can drill them out but I don't want to damage the mounting plate inside the frame. I have not tried heat yet but have been dowsing the bolts with PB Blaster which may not be doing anything since I can't get at the threads.
Ideas? We've considered just using these hinges but one of them is frozen. It might be easier to unfreeze the one hinge then get these bolts out but I am worried about what is underneath...

After an couple days of soaking in Kroil I've had good success with an impact screwdriver. Used the same on old rusted Willys truck and wagon door hinges

I am having a similar problem removing the upper hinge parts from our old '59 windshield. I got the bolts out with lots of soaking but we used a product like pb blaster that is OK to use heat on. I think it's called deep creep. So a combination of soaking and some heat and an impact (hand) driver got them out.

The next problem I have is getting the part of the upper hinge than goes up into the windshield frame out. These have been soaking for months (really!) but I still cannot get them loose. These hinges are really expensive so I would like to use the ones we have.

Posi - or anyone do you all have a good economical souce of Kroil. My better half (mriplaybass) has a small business so a wholesale supplier would work for us. Years ago I had access to it when my Dad work for the Coal Mines as they always had it up at the machine shop. That stuff was amazing....

I stocked up on it when their on a 2 for 1 sale (2 16oz cans for $15 free shipping). I see their now 13oz cans for $14.50 plus shipping.

Jim - weld a washer then a nut onto the screw, then simply wrench it out.

Other options for getting those suckers out would be using a left handed drill on center to try and back them out. Another one would to find a good machinist to drill and rethread that hole on center. Replacing them with a stainless flat head screw would help with any future rust issues.

I will second all the above posts and add this. If you have a oxy-acty welder
you could try heating the screw itself with a number 1 or 2 tip. Get it red hot then let cool. That should be enough to let the rust release. If that doesn't work try a second application of heat. Good luck to you. Mike:)

I have had success with welding a nut to the bolt head when it got stripped out...
