new to the forum, new to the jeep world.just bought a 1980 CJ5 last week, love it !!! driving it all week no problems, went to put it in reverse today and wouldnt go..put it back in 1st w no prob.tried reverse again and it was stuck in 1st.shifter spins like it wants to unscrew...checked the pins in the shift lever and they seem to be in the right position.any other ideas before i drop the Transmission .??any help would be awesome

Try to remove the floor pan to access the top of the Transmission so you can avoid taking the tranny all the way out if possible.

Inspect parts on shift tower and top cover. Take top cover off, and inspect internals. Should be able to see whats going on. Still may have to remove tranny in the end, but at least it will be easier with floor pan out.

Actually now that I think of it, CAN you remove the floor pan in your year? My 74 has bunch of 7/16 bolts to take the mid section of floor pan out, not sure your year...

no floor pan access "panel" but i think i might cut one tomorrow.the tub needs some work anyway.

got it !! the shift fork lug,the part that holds the shifter in place on the shifter rod was stripped out.the shifter was slipping out...of course:):)
thanks for your help

floor pan does open up,had about 6 different screws and some caulk holding it in place

NICE! Glad you got it figured out, and didn't even have to drop the tranny! :)
