I have some surface rust on my jeep CJ7 on the top of the windshield, a few other spots also. I plan to paint my jeep in about a year or so, but want to address this now. I was thinking of sanding it down at first and sealing the metal. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? What grit of sand paper should I use? Any ideas on the rust sealer?

Thanks

I looked all over the forum but could not find anything. If I missed anything direct me to the right thread.

Throw up some pics if you can. If you sand the area out it typically is going to be larger than what you thought. You could sand it and use a quality epoxy primer if you don't mind driving around with that look until you get the job done right. Epoxy does not have the UV protection and will break down after awhile though. Your best bet is tackle the job now or hold off completely. Either way to save from doing it twice.

Same as Mer said -- You could start sanding into it right now, but chances are that you will find the rust effected area will be bigger than what you see coming through the surface. Some of it, if it is showing up through the surface, may well be material that will have to be cut out and patched. This happened to my windshield frame, down by the wiper motor area. I thought I had a little tiny spot to fix, and it turned out that once I got my windshield frame off, nearly the whole underside at the windshield/body seal was rot. I ended up just buying a replacement windshield frame. Sorry to be a downer here, but it's unfortunately likely to be the truth.

On the other hand, if you do happen to just have some surface rust that you're going to clean off and then prep for paint, I'd just use some 220 to take it down to bare metal, then smooth it up with some 320 before applying a primer/sealer.

Thanks for the response. I wish I had pictures to post and show you, but i dropped my CJ off with the local 4x4 shop. I just bought it and wanted them to run through it before i did any of the work myself. Only problem is now all I can think about is working on it. Haha

I have seen how bad the windshield can get. On mine it is just at the very top on the lip. Basically I just dont want it to get any worse knowing I am planning to get a whole year of fun out of my jeep before I start pouring money into things like paint. Once I get it back I will post some pictures.

Ospho prep and etch from Lowe's/ Home Depot. Get some, wire brush or sand down rust, paint with Ospho, let dry, sand again and paint.

Just wipe it off with windex and put a Jeep sticker over it, then wax it! ;)

You, PaRenegade, are the President of the Internet for today with that answer. Hahahaha!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Thank you... my fellow Americans. Especially you Mr. Gore for inventing this thing. :chug:
