WRONG!

So background is although my FI generally has been a success I couldnt run the tank below half a tank.... as soon as I hit half a tank the car would start stumbling and die in traffic.. Fill up the tank seemed to go away. Turns out the 15 gal tank was really rusted inside. When I pulled the fuel filter it was pouring out the inlet like red mud.

So I hit up craigslist and found a oem 20 gall setup complete with skid, poly tank, sending unit for 300 bucks.. I figured that was reasonable considering how much the 20 gal conversions are online and this is an oem fit.

I googled 20 gallon tank conversion and didn't really find alot of info but i figured it was a factory option so what the hell why not pull the trigger. I hopped in the cj and drove to ST Louis to pick up this tank and drove back with only one break down from pushing the tank too low. That was the first PITA

Next I went to drop the 15 gal tank. SHould be easy right?:censored:NO! jeep used carriage bolts on the rear bumper for the skid.. Works great when everything is new and shiny not so great when 30 years of corrosion are mucking up the bolts. So I had to cut these off. PITA 2

I finally got the tank on the ground and had a hell of a time removing the old hoses which were fused to various inlets and out lets. I tried to remove the hoses from the fuel vapor thing behind the rear drivers side turn signal and when it popped off i hit myself in the face and chipped my tooth. PITA 3

so I finally get ready to put this oem tank in .... It won't go in. It doesn't clear the tail pipe! I should have realized this before I tried anything by measuring but I didn't realize that instead of 4 bolts across the back like the 15 gal tank the 20 gal one has 5. I had just measured the clearance from the from the bolt hole closet to the end to make sure there was room. Soooo since I was already committed I cut the tail pipe off infront of the axle behind the muffler.. Not normally a big deal with old jeeps except I paid 400 dollars for a new exhaust when I did the FI conversion which as most of you would recall was not very long ago... Now I have to find a exhaust shop near by to fix or re run my pipe. PITA 4

I finally get everything in and guess what the bumper and hitch receiver which I to remove to get the tank under the truck which I was able to remove with the old tank still in now is being block by the new tank. So I had to drop it back down and mount that up. PITA 5

Oh and during that process I discovered that the sending unit that came with my new used tank was bad. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa:biggun: So I had to order one of those.

The process which should take several hours took almost a month seeing as I had to work around crappy weather and my full time job and every time I turned around i ran into a hurdle.

Other than all that once the obstacles were removed it fit well and the holes were already predrilled into the frame.

Jeeps are starting to not be as fun anymore:(

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Maybe I can learn from your problems. I am planning on swapping out my 15 gallon for a 21.
I am thinking I will try something like this: Gas Tank, 21 Gallon, Plastic X-Large 8128585PL-XL by the Jeep Specialists at Morris 4x4 Center

I think I have plenty of room for the exhaust. I'll have to wear my mouth protector.

Only problem I see with that one over the oem 20 gal one is that it is going to hang really low. If what I am looking at is right it just uses those metal spacers to drop your skid lower and then you bolt the skid to it? I run no lift so that would be a huge issue for me.

Wow, thanks ThisGuyUKnow. I'm going to bid on it. Don't tell anyone else about this deal (except the 2,000 people that visit Jeep-CJ.com every day) It's odd shaped so I need to make some measurements first. It's stainless steel so it should never rust.

Did you get a 20 gallon tank that doesn't hang down lower than OEM. Here is OEM measurements:
15 gallon: 16" x 23" x 10"
21 gallon: 16" x 23" x 15"
MTS COMPANY, L.C. - Jeep fuel tanks

It looks like you may have to reroute the tail pipe but i think it would be worth it..

In this step on the path to enlightenment the lesson to be learned is "Nothing, and I mean nothing, is ever as easy as it first looks or as we are told it will be"

Good job guy, I know from experience that just dropping and raising a stock 15 gal tank is a ROYAL PITA.
good luck Dave stainless is the way to go if the opportunity arises. I won't tell a soul , honest.:D

Stay away from the aftermarket 21 gal swap:

As soon as I get the time and cash, I am getting rid of this thing and swapping back to a 15 gal poly setup

Looks like your rear pumpkin took a nice hit there too. That tank you have looks like a stock poly setup... how is your exhaust run can i see a pic?

So what's wrong with the aftermarket 21 gallon tank? Hangs too low? Cheap extension? You banged yours pretty good. The OEM and the aftermarket 21 gallon tanks are the same size. They both waste space on the left side and they hang down lower than they would if they went closer to the right frame rail. The SS tank that was linked by ThisGuyUKnow makes better use of space. It doesn't hang down as far as other oversized tanks. But I will have to reroute my tailpipe. An all metal tank may be harder to install.

i agree that the stainless one is nice but disagree that the oem 20 gallon wastes space. The one i put in fits from spring to spring there isn't any extra space. The reason I didn't want the 21 gal bisque Dave originally posted is because its the same width as the 15 gallon so it hangs down super low. The factory 20 gallon one I out in hangs a little lower than the 15 but not as much because its wider than the aftermarket.

I should snap a pic of my new tank and post it I guess.

That's what I want an oversized tank that doesn't hang down too low. I am bidding on the eBay tank but I am now leaving in my Jeep for the mountains. When I get back maybe I will be the owner of a new tank. If not I will be looking for suggestions on a good oversized tank. Please do post some pictures.

It looks like nelson's. Except it isn't smashed. He said his is after market but it looks a lot like the factory option one I swapped in.

Ok here is some more information for the guy you know. I have the factory 20 gallon tank in my Cj. If you didn't change the diameter of the exaust you can pick up a tail pipe for an 85/86 Cj from Napa. Cost around 40 bucks and bolts right in. Also ditch the factory skid plate its a joke. Second if you live in a snow / salt area make sure you hose the space between the tank and the frame good after the winter. The area between the tank and frame rails is tight and will collect the salt and leed to a frame rot out.

I could deal with it hanging a bit low, but that oversized tank was on my short list to buy I am glad I saw this,
Ive only seen one oversized tank the 21 gallon poly tank u see in quadrates and 4wd.com type mags is that what you got,

Id be pissed about about my exhaust as well, I just run all new exhaust from headers through a dyno-max system in the rear and if I had to cut it I would be none to happy, but i really need to extra size tank, I believe I am going to try learn to love the 15 gl so to speak,
thanks for this post I appreciate it immensely

No I didnt get it from 4wd this is an oem factory option. I got the exhaust fixed so that it comes out of the corner of the truck it actually looks better than before because he welded on a chrome tip which I wasnt expecting he was able to save everything I left in so its a good thing I was smart enough to cut it after the muffler:cool: I will snap a pic of it tomorrow
