ok i'm swapping out my engine in my 83 CJ7 with the same engine. my question is any tips anyone can provide and how easy it is to switch these engines

Have you ever pulled a motor? I find it easier with the CJ to pull the grill off the front it gives you more room.

I like to leave the bell on the motor and not the Transmission .:D

Makes it easier to remove and replace the bolts. and be sure you don't loose your ball!!! it is on the clutch pivot in the bell and it does and will fall off.

havent been under the hood of an 83 but Im guessing that there is a bunch of vacuum hoses. Mark those with tape or take a picture for reference.

As far as the mechanical portion; these are the easiest engines I've ever pulled.

Like mentioned above, I had the fenders and front clip off. Not sure how much work that is on your year.

I had mine down to the frame when I pulled mine. But When I put the new AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in I used a cherry picker and a jack on the bottom of the oil pan to help stabilize the engine so I could get it lined up with the motor mounts. I found it easier to disconnect the motor mounts from the engine and leave them connected to the frame, but I bet someone else will say to do it the other way..just preference. BTW it wouldn't be a bad idea to label all things coming off the engine(hoses, wires). It was not that hard to do..the Transmission was a different story though

With a auto you have to unbolt the bellhousing from the motor and take off the inspection cover on the bottem of the bellhousing. After taking the cover off you will see the torque converter and the flex plate There should be at least 4 bolts holding the torque converter to the flex plate you will need to remove them. You will need to spin it around to get to each. After they are all out you can push the torque converter into the Transmission some and it will be ready to come out.

The best advise i can give is to find someone that has experience doing this to help or at least watch you...
There is a ton of things that can go wrong and lots of ways to hurt yourself that another pair of eyes can prevent.

When you stick the new engine in, you really have to take your time and make sure everything is out of the way and lined up correct.
The Transmission 's torque converter HAS to be set into the front pump in a certain way as the engine sets in, or you WILL destroy the Transmission as soon as you try to start it...This is where experienced hands come into play.

Don't think I'm trying to talk you out of doing this, its not that hard...I pulled my first engine by myself at the tender age of 13...been doing it ever since. But even now I get help when I think it needs to be there. Once your experienced a little, there isn't much (if anything) that can't be done by yourself on these rigs, with the right tools...
