Hey guys,
New to this forum so if I do anything stupid forgive this newbie. Alright here it goes. I found a 79 CJ7 Barn Find. Some old timer had it on his ranch and it developed a hole in the gas tank that he patched (although none to well) He was skeptical of driving it after that. It was last registered in 82' and only has 28,146 miles (not a joke). Unfortunately the old timer really didn't look after it that well. Although there is virtually no rust his mods have me screaming. Anyway I'm looking for a swing out spare tire carrier as one of the mods was to remove it. Anybody have an idea where I can get one?

When you do find a rear tire rack, make sure it will support the weight of the tire you plan to use. The oem racks get a bit wobbly when guys put oversize tires on.

I have been using my OEM tire carrier to carry my 33" tires since I bought my Jeep in '85.
I did reinforce the attachment points to the body.

Rudy's CJ's and Collins Bros also have them and with patience Ebay has them as well. You're good to go stock with 31's, 33's+ I'd perhaps do as Lumpy did. Make sure the bottom adjuster is set right to help keep it from vibrating (which weakens the whole thing).

If you are not interested in keeping it factory a better choice might be to go with a bumper mounted carrier. I've had to weld up cracks from the swing away carrier in the Jeep and my Bronco.

Better option all around, IMHO. But that really depends on what your 'master plan' is for the CJ.
