Greetings,

The vehicle: 1980 CJ7 Asphalt Heir/Pavement Prince

I spent the last hour searching for some part numbers, compatible part numbers anything that would tell me what to purchase to protect the tail gate from the swing out tire carrier assembly when it's locked down next to the tail gate. The red arrows point to the topic, if it wasn't clear.

I spent a fair amount of time looking at parts in various retail auto parts changes and hardware stores in Seattle. Some looked close, but most looked like they wouldn't hold up well in the weather. Maybe they would, I don't know.

I can certainly purchase one or two (there are two holes) from Collins Bros:

Collins Bros Spare Jeep Tire Bumper

but I'd really rather just go somewhere and get a bolt on part. I am curious if someone has found a decent replacement at a national chain of auto parts retailers, and if anyone has a part number to share.

Locally, Seattle has NAPA, Auto Zone and Cragen... maybe others. I'm just internet-search weary now.

Thanks for any help

Jon,

I had to replace all of those little rubber gum drop looking things a few years ago too. The only place I found that carried them was Collins Bros. I called the customer service number, the lady was really nice, they even carried replacement pieces of rubber for where the latch is too. They were direct replacement for the worn out factory ones, no modifications required. I recommend them.

Thank you, sir!

You used the plural tense; so there are supposed to be two?

Jon, I need the same treatment, to hang the spare I don't have on the swing-out carrier that is missing since I bought the 1980 CJ7 four years ago.

I would buy some sponge-rubber baseballs, about 4 inches in Dia., and arrange to epoxy the balls onto a couple of bolt-heads sticking out of the dingus shown in your second picture. In fact, that's exactly what I'll do.

Sorry 'bout the rust..... my machine came from some place out west where it is dry with lots of rocks... scars to prove it. The bad news is that rocks and the 35s wore out the tierod ends, steering column lower bearings, and likely the front wheel bearings. Good news is that the whole underside and almost all the body is rust-free.

Thanks Dhugg. I think that's an excellent idea. I'd do it if I didn't have more spare change than sense. I have a mild-to-moderate case of financial irresponsibility and its main symptom is my recent rampage making my CJ7 a little more factory and a little less previous owner(s).

I had a buddy cut out the 34 year old floors, weld in new floor panels (I got 'e from some exceedingly nice gentleman in northern middle of our great country).

All my rust is gone. I new factory-matching Forest Green paint and decals from some very nice gentleman from Texas (who happened to be in Spain when I ordered 'em).

No problem Jon, thats what we're all here for :chug:

Those bumpers are generally available in most hardware stores like ACE. Look in the od goodies drawer isle where the nuts and bolts are. I've also seen them at Pepboys. The bumpers aren't anything special, remember manufacturers use stock items when they are available.

Thanks, Hedgehog. The nearest Pepboys is 30 miles in heavy traffic from me. I did look at ACE and other hardware stores, but didn't see anything that fit.

I do know that AMC did acquire parts of opportunity. You say, "stock items when they are available;" maybe this is a time of "not available?"

I placed the order with Collins Brothers last night, so the quest is over.

Thanks, everyone!
