Hi guys, I,m new to your forum but have logged on here and see that you know your jeeps. I recently removed a T19 4spd out of a 86 F250 4x4 ford. It had a 460ci engine. This was one of those special ones w/ a 6.32 1st gear.
My application was set for a CJ7 with a 4.0 that has a small lift and Toyo M/T 33's . This is a mint street jeep that never sees offroad. I know don't flame me for that !! When I called Kovak about the adapter and my use, he seemed to think that I would'nt be happy with this low 1st gear for street.
I have a T-176 now with about a 3.70 1st and was looking for just a little lower 1st gear.
The jeep has a stock Dana 44 rear not sure of the production gear ratio.
What would you suggest ?

i dont think you will use that 6.32 on the street either, it will only go a few miles per hour. I had a NP435 in my 85 Dodge and only used the 6.34 first gear when i stopped on a hill pulling a fully loaded trailer. my 05 Dodge Cummins has the NV5600 and I do not use its first gear either, i always take off in 2nd or 3rd gear. If you want just a little more off the line then adding a little more horse power to the motor or a gear swap in the axles will allow to continue to have a 4 speed versus a 3 speed, and with all that said, i accidently bought an NV4500 for my CJ that has a 6.32 first gear so I will be driving it like a 4 speed most of the time til Im offroad and the 99 to 1 crawl ratio works in my favor

Welcome aboard from Texas as well

I agree with gert. The 6.32 ratio is great for off roading, but not much use on the street. And even though, unlike the T-18 , the T19 is synchronized in all 4 forward gears, by the time you would shift from first to second, you would only be going a few miles per hour.

Since you dont offroad I think you will find its a waste of time and money. If the gears are stock, you likely have 2:73's. You'd be money ahead to re-gear and keep the T-176 . I can PM you my address so you can send the T19 to its proper home ;)

:ww::dbanana::banana:

What R&P ratio are you run'n with the 33's?
Most likely you will never use 1st gear on the street.
I run a T-5 tranny w/4:88R&P and 33's. I start out in 2nd all the time.;)

Hey mtnwhlr thanks for your reply..
I do have to say though my Cj did come with a Dana 44 . The last production 86's got 44's
This is a quote from jeeptech.com
After '76, the AMC20 was the the only axle used in CJs with two exceptions. Some CJ-7s with the Borg-Warner Quadra-Trac Transfer Case came with a 30 spline, one piece shaft, offset, narrow track Dana 44 . The other exception is in 1986, when CJ production was coming to a close AMC 20s were in short supply, so they used wide track Dana 44s in some of the '86 models. Bolt on compatible with any '76-'86 CJ, but wider than earlier narrow tack AMC 20s. Use of the Dana 44 in 1986 began somewhere between serial numbers ending with 049379 and 054173. The axles were flanged and 30 spline. Common ratios were 2.73 and 3.31.

hbwc1984, your CJ is listed as a 84 but you have a Dana 44 as OEM. One of those is a potential typo ;)

I hope you'll give a newbie a mulligan.. My bad I had my jeep details listed wrong ! It is a 86 CJ7 (i have updated it)

This why I said what I did thinking you had a '84.

The older I get the more mulligans become part of life ;)

as stated already that 6.32:1 is all but useless in a street jeep the only time it may get used is if your pulling some shrubs out of the ground around your house

btw would love to see some pics of your jeep

I can attest to this, the T-18 isn't an optional street Transmission . 1st gear is useless unless you're starting on an uphill, being synchronized would be nice, but being non-synchronized means you can't downshift in to 1st. I really do drive it like a 3 speed most of the time starting out in 2nd gear.

4th gear is 1:1 ratio, running on the highway is really high RPM's. 55-60 mph is 3,000 (ish) RPM's.

Until we know the OP's, R&P ratio. The highway RPM(60-65mph)can not be determined with any degree of accuracy.:notworthy:
Unless a PO changed it. Your R&P is either 2:73 or 3:31 ratio.
Down shifting a non scyno tranny(T-18 , 1st gear)can be done easily, when you learn how to 'double-clutch'. ;)

There it is, the Lumpy Grits, it's not an insult if I put a smiley after it insult...

If I only knew how to 'double clutch'

What gear ratio are you running?

Stock 3.54, as long as that's an "N" stamped on my rear axle not an "M".
