I have a 77 CJ with an ariginal AMC 304 and GM Turbo 400 that I have been restoring and it is coming along great, considering it sat on a farm for almost twenty years, problem is that my GM Turbo 400 case is cracked beyond repair, which evidently the po tried jb weld to stop the crack. I found a GM Turbo 400 from the same year CJ and have done all the prep and disconnects to do the swap, now I am looking for advice or suggestions on getting the block to trany bolts off, there tucked and a booger to get at and everything else is done with my new GM Turbo 400 sitting next to the rig waiting to get put in...help please.

Everything is still in the Jeep?

I like to use about a 3' extension with a wobble on the end. Seems to keep me from swearing too much!

Also works very good on my '76 GMC with the 350/350.

:agree: and I let the tail of the Transmission drop down to give you more room to get to them.

:agree: that's the best way to get to them.

THANK YOU for the quick answers/repsonse and yes, everything is still in the jeep. When you say to let the tail of the tranny drop a bit, would I have the cross member out, Haynes manual did not ref taking it out and it did say to disconnect the drive shaft at the transfer end (the yoke), but I dont see the DS being in the way, maybe its the lift keeping it from the tranny, but I seem to have plenty of room. All the work is done, with the exception of the darn block to tranny bolts LOL and I don't wanna screw something up, I was an automotive machinist in a previous life (prior to joining the Army) and its been years since I have worked on my own, but I really am having a BLAST working on this ol CJ and planning on droppin a built AMC 401 I found and starting to rebuild.

Yes you will have to remove the crossmember and what do is pull the upper bolts first then raise it back up and get your jack under it before pulling the bolts on the bottem. And be sure to unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate first.
